Lindsay (Lynne) Kindersley Dole b. Dec. 18th, 1929 – d. Sept 13, 2024
Lynne was born Dec. 18th, 1929, in Martinstown Manor in Dorset, UK, daughter of Charles and Christina Kindersley, and sister of the late Richard Kindersley (d. 1955). Loving mother to Richard Lewis Dole (d. 2023) and Kathryn “Kathy” Margaret Dole (Johnny) and grandsons Johnny Lynn and Dale (Chania) of Winchester, Virginia.
Lynne’s compassion and generosity extended to all, from people to animals to anyone in need. Her kind and gracious manner was accompanied by an intelligent, curious mind that continued to learn every day. Her commitment to her religion caused her to be interested in all religions. Her sense of humour and wonderful smile charmed all who knew her. Anyone who met her would feel they were special – she had a wonderful gift of listening and respectful sharing of ideas and stories.
Lynne’s many friends included members of All Saints Anglican Church, the Credit Forks Garden Club, her bridge partners and book clubs. She was a much respected lifelong member of Eglinton and Caledon Hunt, and was held in great regard by huntsmen who valued her well-constructed comments about
their hounds. Whatever the conversations, Lynne was curious and engaged, widely read with well informed opinions, complemented by a truly remarkable memory.
Lynne had an adventurous life – as a baby, Lynne and her mother Chriss sailed to Talara, Peru via New York, when a rogue wave nearly swept baby Lynne overboard! The remainder of the trip was safe, and Lynne and brother Richard had an adventurous childhood in Peru. Her family spent a few years in Kathmandu, Nepal, and Lynne was sent to England for boarding school. At the outbreak of WWII, the family were living in London, Ontario. Charles enlisted in the Corps of Engineers, and Chriss went to Dorset, England, to bring her elderly mother to Ontario for safety. However, neither parent was able to get back to London, Ontario, for five years. Devoted nanny Jesse Kerr parented both Lynne and Richard for those years, until their parents returned home – unexpectedly, on different routes, and within 24 hours of each other!
Lynne’s later teen years were in Toronto, when her father Charles became Master of Eglinton Hunt, then located in north Toronto. A trip to Virginia in 1953 to see her lifelong friend, Marilyn Massey, encouraged her to move to Virginia in 1955, staying for two over decades, with her daughter Kathy and her late son Richard. In the
1960’s, Lynne and Marilyn rode their favorite horses named “Brandy” and “Rum”, and joked that it sounded like they owned a bar!
In 1956, Lynne became the first and longest serving Librarian of the newly created prestigious National Sporting Library in Middleburg, Virginia, for 21 years. In 2019, she donated her Jean Bowman painting of her father Charles and brother Richard with the Eglinton & Caledon hounds to the Library.
In the later ’70’s, she returned to Caledon to help her parents with the farm, and contributed to the greater Caledon community through her church and volunteer work. Kathy and Richard visited her in Ontario, and Lynne made frequent trips to Virginia to see family and friends. A more generous and caring soul would be impossible to find. Anyone who knew Lynne well would appreciate her reluctance at being lauded, but she’s most deserving of our love and kind words.
The Memorial Service to celebrate Lynne’s life will be held at All Saints Anglican Church, 18 Main Street, Erin, Ontario on Saturday September 28th, 2024 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception in the Church Hall following the service. Webcast of service will be available on our website – please note wifi connection is sometimes difficult in the church and may cause interruption.
Memorial Donations may be made to All Saints Erin Endowment Fund, the McGibbon Memorial Fund at All Saints, Erin or Bethell Hospice Foundation.
A tree will be planted in memory of Lynne in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville.
