LYLE NICOL
Lyle Joseph Nicol, age 76, suffered a heart attack and died on October 16, 2023,
at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
Lyle was born on the Ides of March (March 15), 1947, at Saint Joseph’s
Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He lived his early years in Jackfish and later
grew up in Terrace Bay, Ontario. He went to school at St. Martin’s and later
Terrace Bay High School. He attended Lakehead University, and then the
University of Ottawa, where he obtained a degree in photography. He also
received a degree in education at Lakehead University. He worked for two
decades at ARF, which later became CAMH. His own sobriety, which lasted the
last 34 years of his life, was a point of pride.
He will be forever loved and missed by his wife, Vicki Baker, his children, Luke
(Samira), Bret, and Kate (Michael), and stepchildren, Shari (Ray) and Kelly
(Janine), and his grandchildren, Azelia, Maeve, Hudson, Oaklyn, Kylie, Cheryl,
Diana, and Thomas. He is also lovingly survived by his sisters, Paulette
(Kathryn) and Marcia (Graham), his many nieces and nephews, and his first
wife Lita. He is predeceased by his parents, Melvin and Irene, and his sister
Karen.
Lyle had many interests and was a great cultural consumer. He was a writer of
short stories, a prolific journal keeper, and a longtime member of NOWW. He
liked to paint and draw. He was deeply interested in music, from classical to pop
and rock, and he especially loved The Who. He enjoyed driving and road trips,
especially in his Mazda with the sunroof open. The ghost town of Jackfish was
often the destination. Above all else, he was passionate about skiing. He was
taught to ski by his mother at the Terrace Bay Ski Hill, now known as Trestle
Ridge. He made many ski trips to the Canadian Rockies and skied in
Switzerland and the Laurentians. He was a certified ski instructor for many
years and a familiar face at Mount Baldy, where he was not just a member but a
fixture. He loved time with his children and grandchildren, and when it came to
coffee, he could always “stand a cup.”
A service will be held Tuesday, October 24, at 11:00 am at St. Margaret’s
Church in Thunder Bay, followed by a reception at Mt. Baldy. In lieu of
flowers, donations can be made to Shelter House, the Salvation Army, or the
Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
