Obituary
Louise Anne Ploc, resident of Grimshaw, passed away on December 21, 2022 in Grimshaw Long Term Care at the age of 82.
Louise was born February 25, 1940 in Cold Lake, Alberta to Fergus and Mary Milaney nee: Schneider. Louise had four siblings – Wayne, Daniel, Theresa, and Celine. The family moved often as Fergus taught in many country schools. Louise, as the oldest, had many responsibilities, but she loved school and would often be reading under her covers at night with a flashlight.
In 1957, after obtaining her high school diploma in Heisler, Louise attended the University of Alberta to take her teacher training; thus, she began a long career in education. While at U of A, Louise and Victor were dating and had to seek permission from the nuns to see each other on the occasional Saturday. They were engaged on Christmas day in 1957 and were married July 26, 1958. During their first year together they taught in Killam; however, at the end of the year, they took teaching positions in Calgary and were there for two years. With classroom experience gained, they decided to head North and were in High Prairie for five years. Daughter Tanya was born in 1962 and daughter Aleeta came along in 1966 – just before the move to Hanna. Victor returned from summer school and loaded the car with a four year old toddler, a two week old baby, a rabbit, a guinea pig, some hamsters, two budgie birds and a courageous, exhausted Louise! While living and teaching in Hanna, both Victor and Louise continued their university education. They moved to the Crowsnest Pass in 1972 and Louise taught in both Blairmore and Coleman. In 1980, Victor and Louise made their last move to Grimshaw. Louise taught in a number of schools in the area and became involved in school administration. She was the Principal of Dixonville School, which led to many trips on icy, winter roads. There were a few phone calls and rescues along the way, but nothing deterred Louise from her responsibilities. She later became the Principal of Springfield Elementary School where she remained until her retirement in 1998.
Louise, after many years of hard work and summer classes, earned her Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary. She took many specialty classes in special education, early childhood, and administration. She received the Excellence in Teaching Award from Alberta Education in 1990.
During her 40 years in education, Louise impacted the lives of many children. Her love was working with elementary aged students; she had a soft spot for those who needed it most. She had training in Special education, English Language Learning, and she focused her career on the importance of Literacy and developing a passion for reading and learning in the children she taught. Louise influenced and touched the lives of many little people.
After retirement, Louise continued to be actively involved with the community and with education. As the oldest sibling of five, Louise was never wanting to sit still and soon she had roped Victor into numerous activities. They were hired as Forest Educators and continued their passion of teaching students. They received the Lenny Award for outstanding community commitment and contribution towards greater understanding of the forestry industry in Alberta. Louise loved the kids and Victor taught the science! They were also involved in numerous drama productions – Victor directed and Louise worked with the “little ones” in all of their different roles – including the musical numbers. Between the forestry walks and the play rehearsals, Louise always had time to tutor children who needed a little extra help. Regardless of the role she took on, Louise prioritised caring for children – never forgetting her bag of tissues, snacks, water, along with bandages, safety pins, something for bug bites and anything else someone might need.
Louise’s family was the most important thing in her life. She loved to spend time with her five grandchildren and was always baking, reading, or creating something to keep them busy and learning. There was a plethora of toys and books at Grandma’s house and Grandma always had the famous activity bag ready to go! She enjoyed travelling, baking, playing the piano, walking and organizing everything!
Louise is survived by Victor, her husband of 64 years, daughter Tanya Plante (Tom), grandchildren Andrew (Jessica), Tyler, Alannah Jones (Dustyn) and great grandchildren Kaleb and Braxtyn, and daughter Aleeta Ploc (Troy Houlder) and grandchildren Kieryn and Shaelyn.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of The Chapel of Memories. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring of 2023. Donations can be made on her behalf to Grimshaw Long Term Care.
