It is with great sadness that the family of Louis Abraham Schnider announces his peaceful passing, on Sunday, April 13, 2024, at the age of one hundred and two. Husband of the late Rose Shlamowitz and the late Anne Litvack Schnider. Father and father-in-law of Barbara Gordon, Howard and Shelli Schnider. Cherished grandfather of Mitchell and Shirley Gordon; Alana and Phil Reznick, Ryan and Miriam Schnider, Marlee and Eric Landy. Proud great-grandfather of nine great-grandchildren. Louis was the son of the late Hyman Schnider and the late Tillie Mekler and brother of the late Rose Cutler Medwinsky. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. Special uncle to Stacey and Freddie Seller and their family. Very close cousin to Mel Manis. Dear friend to Madeleine Giroux. Heartfelt gratitude to the 6th floor staff of Kastner Pavilion at the Jewish Eldercare Centre, to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the Jewish General Hospital, and to his most devoted and dedicated caregiver, Jasmine Shakes.
Born and raised in Canada, Louis attended Bancroft Elementary and Commercial High, ranking number two in Canada on his matriculation exams in 1939. He served in the RCAF during World War II, stationed throughout the country. After the war, he had a key sense for business and was involved in several different ventures in Montreal, New York and Japan. Eventually, he owned stores in the carpet industry. For the last 20 years, Louis worked at Trans Canada Carpet and retired in his ninety-eighth year when COVID broke the routine.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Monday, April 15 at 12:00 noon. Burial at the Russian Polish Hebrew Cemetery, de la Savane. Shiva at his son’s home through Wednesday evening. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Israel Emergency Fund c/o Federation CJA, 514-345-2600, or to the charity of your choice.
