Linda MacMullen Obituary
Linda MacMullen RN, 63, of Frenchvale, passed away peacefully and surrounded by the love and comfort of close family and friends on June 12, 2024, after a 16 month battle with Glioblastoma.
Linda was born on July 25, 1960 to Michael and Winnifred MacMullen of Frenchvale. As the only girl in a household with five brothers, she quickly learned to be assertive and took no nonsense. She was direct and fiercely devoted to her family, friends, and her faith. She loved a good laugh and many can attest to her pranks and tomfoolery. Whether a quick drive into town for tea, or longer road trips- across Canada (twice), or to Boston’s Mayo Clinic to help her close friends, Linda loved to drive and explore the world. She loved to share stories about her travels. She visited Alaska, Hawaii, and Washington DC. In recent years, she traveled with the Sydney Chamber of Commerce group to China, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and recently went to South Africa, where she achieved a lifelong dream of going on a Safari. She also had the opportunity to pair her passion for helping others with her desire to travel. She volunteered in the Dominican Republic, Nepal, and the 1997 Red River Flood in Winnipeg.
Linda graduated as an Electrical Engineering Technologist from the University College of Cape Breton before continuing to the St Francis Xavier’s Nursing Program, and later achieving a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She has been a supervisor with Cape Breton County Homemakers since 2011, and previously worked for VON where she developed a lifelong friendship with Ursala Dufour. She started her work career at the Halifax Infirmary.
Linda went above and beyond her job description. Never one to wait for bureaucracy, she would dive into the tasks at hand. Her dedication and compassion often led to meaningful connections and longstanding relationships with her clients and their families. She showed unwavering generosity and compassion to more people than we can ever know.
She is survived by her brothers, Neil MacMullen (Judy), Terrance MacMullen (June), Albert MacMullen, and Darryl MacMullen; nephew Kyle MacMullen (Ellen; great-nephews Charlie Earl and Kyle), nieces Courtney MacMullen (Gorman), and Lindsay MacMullen (Oren); cousin Jessie (Bennett) McCormick; and her beloved dog, Franklin. She was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Winnifred, and brother Michael.
As she bravely and defiantly faced her cancer diagnosis, in true Linda fashion her concerns were only family and friends, and others she’d be leaving behind. So, Good Shepherd, as you spent your life in the pursuit of helping others, it is now your time to rest, find peace, and be counted in the Lord’s heavenly flock.
There will be a visitation for Linda from 6-9 pm, on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, June 17, at St. Mary’s Parish Frenchvale, with a light lunch to follow at the Frenchvale Firehall. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of the Cancer Center, Palliative Care, Hospice Cape Breton, and countless family and friends who have reached out and provided their support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Clinic at Cape Breton Regional Hospital or Hospice Cape Breton.
