On January 21, 2024, Linda D’Orsay, RN (nee MacKenzie), age 73, drew her last breath at her home in Coxheath, NS. She passed away peacefully with medical assistance in dying surrounded by loved ones and family. This followed a lengthy illness due to a rare liver autoimmune disease. Thank you to Dr. Dawn Brown for her caring compassionate approach and kindness.
Linda is survived by her husband of 50 years, John “Jack” D’Orsay; children, Craig (Heather Morrison), Rigaud, QC, Colleen (David Fitzgerald), Sydney River, NS and Clayton (Amy), Howie Centre, NS. She also leaves behind three grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Elania “Lonnie” D’Orsay, Donald J.C. Marshall and Shayle Fitzgerald; along with special lifelong friends, Anna Marie and Brian MacNevin, who were her true family.
Linda was predeceased by her parents, John and Phylis MacKenzie (nee Grant); brother, Grant MacKenzie; granddaughter, Ashleen Louise D’Orsay; and son-in-law, Donald Marshall Jr.
Choosing to die on one’s own terms has been a surreal yet sacred journey for Linda and her loved ones. The children’s poem “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep,” ran through Linda’s mind constantly as she greeted dear friends and family at her home during her final days. Throughout this process, Linda was able to share stories and remembrances with those she held most dear. Family meant everything to her, especially her children and grandchildren. A fiercely loyal person, there was nothing Linda wouldn’t do to ensure their safety, comfort and well-being now and in all days to come.
She spent her lifetime career as a nurse, first as a CNA for 20 years and then as an RN on the Obstetrical Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. She dearly loved babies and the mothers she served. As a person with learning disabilities, Linda had often felt becoming an RN at the age of 36 with teenagers, was out of reach. With determination and great effort, she graduated second in her class. There was nothing Linda couldn’t do once she set her mind to it!
In her earlier years, Linda was very active in the United Protestant Church of Sydney River, volunteering for church fundraisers, choir and many fellowship activities. She was also president of the Engineers’ Wives Club in Sydney, making lifelong connections with others when her children were young.
Special thanks to Anna Marie and Brian MacNevin, Judy Grant and Marlene and Peter Weaver, who came together to make this time so much easier for Linda and her family. You are all deeply loved and appreciated.
Funeral service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, January 26th at 11 a.m. with Mr. Gary Grant officiating, followed by a reception. Burial will occur at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Linda’s memory may be made to the Sydney Sunrise Rotary Club, PO Box 231, Sydney, NS, B1P 6H1, or to a charity of your choice.
