Obituary for LeVero Mitchell Carter
LeVero Mitchell Carter, lovingly known as «Blues Man Lee,» entered this world on December 26, 1948, in Berkeley, California, a city vibrant with the spirit of change that would come to define much of his life’s work. On September 1, 2024, surrounded by love and with a peaceful heart, he departed this earthly realm in Nanaimo, joining the ancestors who awaited him with open arms.
LeVero was a tireless advocate for the Black Civil Rights Movement. His passion for justice and equality knew no bounds. His voice was one of advocacy and justice for many.
A successful entrepreneur and visionary, LeVero was always ahead of his time with his keen business acumen. He owned, designed, and developed properties throughout Edmonton and BC, leaving a lasting impact on the communities he touched. Through his actions and achievements, he taught his children that anything is possible with hard work and dedication. He often spoke of the «three P’s»—Patience, Perseverance, and Persistence—principles he lived by and passed down as a guiding light for their own journeys.
Along with his mother, Velma Carter, LeVero co-created the Black Cultural Research Society of Alberta, an organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history and culture of Black Canadians. His work ensured that the stories of those who came before us were not only remembered but cherished, teaching us the strength found in our roots and the power of our shared history.
His faith was a guiding light in his life. As a Deacon and music director in the Baptist church in Edmonton, LeVero’s soul resonated with a divine rhythm, one that moved through the congregation like a warm, comforting embrace. His songs were prayers that lifted spirits, and his leadership was a testament to his unwavering faith.
Above all, LeVero was a loving father and grandfather of nine, whose joy and pride in his family were evident in every smile, every story, and every song. He was a guiding star, a beacon of strength, and a source of endless love and wisdom.
In Nanaimo, where he was affectionately known as Blues Man Lee, he became a beloved figure, sharing his music and his heart with all who had the privilege of knowing him. His presence was a blessing; his absence will be profoundly felt.
LeVero has now gone home to be with his mother, Velma Carter, his father, Mitchell Carter, and all the ancestors who have paved the way before him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, music, faith, and resilience—a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him and even those who did not.
Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find comfort in knowing that LeVero’s spirit is now free, soaring among the stars, singing with the angels. His life’s work on earth is complete, and now he rests in eternal peace, his soul joining the divine orchestra of the heavens, where his spirit continues to sing in harmony with the angels, giving us strength always.
Rest in peace, dear LeVero Mitchell Carter. Your music will forever play on in our hearts.
