Obituary
Leonie Frey, long time resident of Peace River, Alberta passed away on December 17, 2022 at the age of 100 years. Leonie was born on September 9, 1922 in Weiach, Switzerland. She was the second oldest of four children of Johann and Olga Baumgartner.
In 1954, Leonie came to Canada from Switzerland to meet her future husband Ferdinand Frey of the Peace River (Judah area). They were married November 13, 1954 and farmed till their retirement. They started their family in 1955 and by 1965 there were four children; two daughters, Annette and Barbara and two sons, Daniel and David.
Leonie would always welcome friends, workers, relatives, family and newcomers in her home for delicious meals, cards, visits or to stay the night while passing by. It was always a very busy house. Later Leonie found much joy covering the large yard with various trees and many rock gardens full of different flowers or shrubs. She was very proud of her large vegetable garden which she knew was important to keep those she fed healthy.
Leonie and Ferdinand’s grandchildren came next. There would be eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Leonie was very proud of her family. She had an incredible memory even at 100 and she had everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries memorized.
Leonie is predeceased by her husband Ferdinand, her daughter Barbara Knisely, son in law Jeff Reid and sister Olgi Baumgartner.
Leonie is survived by her two younger brothers, Hans and Willi of Switzerland, her children Annette, Daniel (Irina), David (Sylvianne), her son in law James Knisely, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Leonie’s unwavering strength, fierce determination and generous spirit will live on through those that knew her.
Funeral services for the late Leonie Frey will be held at The Chapel of Memories in Peace River on Monday, January 23, 2023 at 11:00 am. Interment will take place at Judah Cemetery at 2:00 pm.
If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Peace River Municipal Library or the Peace River Museum as expressions of sympathy.
