Obituary
Leona “Peggy Squires
Big Bras d’Or
With heavy hearts, the family of Peggy Squires announce her peaceful passing at the Northside Community Guest home on Wednesday, August 23, 2023. She was 94.
Mom was born in New Harris and moved to Cape Dauphin when she was 4 years old. When she was 15 the family moved across the lake to Big Bras d’Or, where she met the love of her life while tobogganing on the Ferry Road. She and Jim were married in 1951. Big Bras d’Or became her home and she loved living in the close-knit community. Throughout her life, Mom was always very involved in the community and in her church. She was always cooking or baking for some event, and we knew early on not to eat food cooling on the cupboard without checking to see if it was for home or not! Mom also spent many of her early years taking care of her in-laws, Florence and Jack Squires, in her home, and also looked after her Aunt Agnes MacKenzie in the months preceding her death. Our home had a swinging door, and lots of meals and cups of tea were made for our many visitors. We were lucky to live on the hill with all our Squires’ aunts and uncles and cousins, so there were lots of people coming and going.
Mom went to work at Alderwood Rest Home in later years, and worked there as a pastry cook for 17 years. She was well known for her cinnamon rolls and fat archies. She loved her work there and was honored by the staff and administration when she retired. She was also known for her cake decorating skills, and made and decorated wedding cakes for many of her family, friends and co-workers. She and my father both also loved to square dance, and enjoyed many a night on the floor, even in their later years.
Mom was a long-time member of St. James Presbyterian Church. She often told us of the days when she and her grandfather walked from the Cape, crossed on the ferry, and then walked to church at St. James. She served in the choir and was a CGIT leader in earlier years, as well as being a life-time member of the Women’s Missionary Society (WMS). She could usually be found serving tea in the kitchen for many happy and sad occasions at the church. She also worked with the Fire Ladies Auxiliary and supported our Dad in his charity work.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years, James Squires, who passed away in 2015, her parents Alfred and Sally (Stewart) Clark and sister Mabel (MJ) MacEachern. She is survived by her three children and their families: Valeria (Mike) Dolmont, New Harris, Sheldon (Loretta) Squires, Big Bras d’Or and Trevor (Tina) Squires, Berwick; Grandsons Matthew (Camille) Dolmont, Buenos Aires, Mark (Alison) Dolmont, Dartmouth, and Shaemus (Brittney) Squires, Sydney Forks; great-grandchildren Silas and Fae Dolmont, Dartmouth. She also leaves behind wonderful nieces and nephews Stephen and Carolyn MacEachern, David and Peggy MacEachern, Kathy and Stuart Squires, Kevin and Pat (Collins) Squires, Dorinda (Ralph) McCully, Antigonish, Sophie King, Bras d’Or, Linda (Allan) Parsons and Robert Squires, NL and they’re families. Also, her special cousin Betty (Clyde) Tanner, and the many close cousins and loved ones both at home and Massachusetts who have always been an important part of her life. Mom always said that they were so good to her, calling and visiting her often.
We want to express our sincere thanks to the many kind and caring staff at the Northside Community Guest Home, especially in Cara house, where she spent the last two years and was made to feel like family. A special thank you to LPN Pat Murray who had a close bond with Mom.
Also, we would also like to extend a special thank you to her family physician, Dr. Dawn Browne for her care over the last few years, especially for her attention and compassion in Mom’s end-of-life care.
Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d’Or at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2023. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery immediately following the service. A reception and a chance to speak with the family will be held following the service at the Big Bras d’Or Fire Hall. Peggy would not want you to leave without a hot cup of tea. Family flowers only by request. Memorial donations can be made to St. James Presbyterian Church General Fund or charity of your choice. Online condolences can be left for the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
