Lang: George Reginald (“Reg”) was born at Coulter, MB on January 16th, 1931 to Frank and Ethel (Murray) Lang in a family of five sons and four daughters. He was predeceased by his wife Jean, his parents, an infant brother Everett, brothers Francis (Sonny) & Murray who were killed in World War 2, brother Andy, sisters Jean Downey, Dorothy Downey Margaret Greaves & Lorraine Richardson, sister-in-law Ila Lang, brother-in-law’s Louis Downey, Leighton Downey, Gerald Greaves & George Richardson.
He is survived by:
– his son Murray (Birgit), their daughters Jenica (Jon) and Jordanna (Jeremy)
– his son Garry (Lorraine), their daughter Jackie (Sean) and their son Geoff (Katelyn)
– great grandchildren Ashley, Terrence, Dylan, Thea, Avery, and Rio.
– and many nieces and nephews.
Reg and Jean were married at Deloraine MB. on August 23rd, 1958 and celebrated 59 years of marriage on August 23rd, 2017.
Reg attended school at Coulter, Lyleton and Brandon. In August 1948 he attended the University of Winnipeg for teacher training and then went to teach at Coultervale school. In 1949 he moved to Souris to work for his uncle Andy Murray and his son Del Murray at Murray’s Farm Equipment, after which he worked for 5 years at Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1959 he started in Brandon as an insurance adjuster, then in 1960 became the Manager of the Souris Credit Union. In 1969 he started Lang Insurance & Real Estate. After attending Auction school, he worked with Kirbyson Auctions, which eventually became Lang Auctions. In 1971 he and his brother Andy opened Lang Motors in Souris. In 1975, partnered with Bill Boorman, he opened the Souris Chicken Delight, In 1981 he was appointed Magistrate.
He was a member and secretary-treasurer of the Souris Golf Club, Souris Curling Club, and Souris Glenwood Chamber of Commerce for several years. He was also the announcer for the Souris Cardinal ball games and the Souris Elks hockey games. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church and sang in the choir, a member of the Souris Elks Lodge, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Masonic Lodge, Souris Flying Club, Parks Board and proudly served on the Souris Fire Brigade for over 30 years.
Reg loved to golf and won several trophies including the Dr. L.W. Knight trophy in 1966, 1970 and 1990. In 1994 and 1998 he was the Senior Men’s Champion and medalist at the Tamarack tournament at Clear Lake. He was particularly proud of the trophy presented to him in 2006 for 55 consecutive years entered in the Minot ND golf tournament.
Although they always wanted to stay in Souris, in 2016 Reg & Jean reluctantly moved to Brandon, then Winnipeg, due to Jean’s health care needs. It was very difficult for them to have to move away and Reg was always a great supporter of Souris.
Reg passed away peacefully on January 31, 2023 in Winnipeg with his sons Murray & Garry at his side.
Funeral service will held at St. Paul’s United Church, Souris, on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow at the Souris & Glenwood Cemetery Columbarium.. In memory of Reg, donations may be made to the Souris Glenwood Community Foundation, Box 518, Souris, MB R0K 2C0.
