It is with profound sadness that we say goodbye to Klaus, 68, who peacefully passed away in his sleep at home from heart failure and was pronounced deceased on June 9, 2023. A celebration of life will be held on his property at 2309 Fern Glen Rd. Sprucedale, ON, the afternoon of Saturday, October 7, 2023.
Born in Voerde, West Germany, Klaus came to Canada in 1972 at age 18 to start a new life. He lived with his Tanta Freida, Oncle Heinrich and cousin Harts Guttmann, in Etobicoke. Klaus and Harts eventually moved into their own apartment in downtown Toronto. Klaus applied to a job he found in the German newspaper and gained employment at Ivy Landscaping. After Ivy dissolved, he worked for Geoscape Landscaping as a heavy machine operator until retirement. Klaus met Sandy after a Toronto Maple Leaf game at the Golden Mug pub; they were married on March 16th, 1979. After living in the Etobicoke area for several years, they saved and purchased a family home on Willow Street in Holland Landing, ON., in 1985. Klaus and Sandy happily raised their children; Jaime, Chris & Karin, and took pride in ownership, improving the home and landscaping the property for many years before parting ways.
Klaus loved cottaging in the Muskoka area (Bala, Port Sandfield). You could often find him spending his summers on the water driving his 150 HP Mercury engine Sidewinder, or snowmobiling on the OFSC trails on his Pathfinder Skidoo during winter. Klaus, loving a northern lifestyle, spent the majority of his late 50’s living rusticly on the land at a hunting camp, better known as The Cooler, in Utterson, ON. There, he enjoyed hosting weekends with friends and went on many ATVing adventures, he also enjoyed fishing for bass on Axe Lake. In 2016, Klaus purchased his “dream come through” waterfront home and property consisting of 9 acres on Fern Glen Road in Sprucedale, ON. Here, he enjoyed a new peacefulness taking in the scenery on Round Lake with his beloved dogs Max & Bailey and their puppies. This was his final resting place. Klaus was a cancer survivor after 2 surgeries for colorectal cancer along with chemo and radiation each time. Although he was cancer free for nearly a decade, the life saving procedures left his spine, teeth and bones in frail condition. In the end, his pain was near unbearable. Klaus is now free from pain and resting easy, watching over his family who are enjoying his Round Lake property, the way he always intended.
Klaus is predeceased by his parents Karl-Heinz Hessel 1931-2019 and Hedwig Guttmann 1930-2014. Survived by his three children, Jaime-Lynn Hargraft (Cameron, Brody and Avery), Christopher Hessel (Shannon, Justin, Breanna, Ryan and Abby) and Karin Hessel (Richard, Scott, Jordan and Adrianna) and estranged wife/life long friend, Sandy Hessel (Dugdale). Loved and missed dearly by his sisters Monika (late Jurgen Polczyk) and Angelika (Norbert Biens, Marco, Benny, and Mandy).
