Katherine Bernadette Kennedy Obituary
It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Katherine Lyons-Kennedy, age 90 years at the Carbonear Hospital on Saturday, May 11, 2024 surrounded by her family.
Kitty, as affectionately known to everyone, is predeceased by her loving husband, Maurice as well as her parents, George and Annie Mary (Devereaux) Lyons, her sister, Marguerite and brothers, Allan, James, Michael and Daniel.
Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of beautiful memories are her cherished children who will miss her dearly, Maurice (Shirley) and Katrina (Trevor), two adored grandchildren; Jonathan and Catherine (John), her sisters: Mary (Mae) Hicks, Anne Hicks, Anita Zoskey (Bob) and Joan Gibbons (Pat), as well as several nephews and nieces who were near and dear to her heart, especially Michelle Lyons, Pat (Clarence) Joy and Bill (Dianne) Kennedy, as well as her lifelong friend, Margaret (Moore) Martin.
Kitty and Maurice spent more than twenty years in Schefferville where they made lifelong friendships. While there, she was employed as a supply teacher and was an avid bowler, curler and cross-country skier. Upon their retirement they returned back to their hometown of Avondale in 1983. Retirement was not for Kitty, so she pursued a new career this time as a cook and was employed by Philip and Angela Duke at their Irving Restaurant located on the TCH near Holyrood, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. She shared many great times, laughs and stories with all her fellow co-workers. She treasured every day she worked there.
Kitty loved her family. She loved to entertain and to be entertained and was in her glee when hosting a family gathering or playing cards and darts. She was a longtime member of the Avondale Heritage Society, Avondale Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary as well as a very faithful member of Assumption Parish Church. Over the years, she was an altar server, Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Church choir, all roles she was very honoured to be part of.
At Kitty’s request, cremation has taken place. The family will be receiving visitors at Dunphy’s Funeral Home, Holyrood. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 16th from 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, Colliers on Friday, May 17, 2024 at 11:00 am with inurnment to follow at Assumption Cemetery, Goat Shore Road, Avondale.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Assumption Cemetery, P.O. Box 9, Avondale, NL, AOA lBO or by EMT to assumptionppavon@outlook.ca
At this time, we would like to thank Dr. Russ Lake and staff for taking great care of our mother over the years as well as Carol Ann Lake and staff of “The Dispensary Ltd” in Avondale for attending to her needs. To father Michael Barker and Father David Joy for their visits and spiritual guidance, thank you. To the palliative care team of doctors, nurse practitioners and nursing staff at the Carbonear Hospital and Eastern Health in Holyrood as well as her home care support, Jill and Helen who provided the utmost care to our mother over the last several weeks, a very sincere thank you. To everyone who took the time to visit with mom whether it be to play cards or sit and have a chat, thank you. Mom appreciated all the help she received which enabled her to live independently in her own home. We are very grateful to those who provided snow clearing, lawn care and general maintenance and repair anytime something went wrong in her house. To our cousin Bill, you were her “guardian angel” and to us you are that and more. To our aunts, Mae and Annie, thank you for your companionship and love. A sister’s bond is something special.
“A Mother’s Love is a Blessing”
