Obituary
KAROL KOLASA (October 27, 1926- February 25, 2023)
Our dear loving Tata died peacefully in the quiet of midwinter in his 97th year surrounded by his family. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Frances (née Baran) decd. 1993. Son of Stanislaw (decd.1940 and Marianna (née Wierzbowska) decd 1946. He was the youngest of 7 brothers and one sister; the last of his generation.
Treasured and much loved father of Halina Adamczyk (Rick), Jane, Diane, and Rita Kolasa, grandfather (dziadziu) of Karl (Alexandra), Franc and Renata Adamczyk and 5 great grandchildren. Dear uncle and great uncle to numerous nieces and nephews in Poland.
As all of his generation, WW2 was life changing. At the outset Karol was displaced in Poland to do farm work for a German family and in 1943 was taken to Essen Germany from his village Kudrowice (Pabianice), Poland to do forced labour in bricklaying and mining. At the end of the war he wanted to return to Poland and reunite with his family but was not allowed to as the Russians could have taken him to Siberia. He joined the American Army Polish Division. In 1948 he arrived in Halifax Canada on the SS Marina Falcon. After a few days he left for Vancouver on a freight train to work for CPR with track and bridge gangs. After he fulfilled his one year required contract, he left for Toronto to work in construction, followed by a move to Brantford to deliver Ontario Bread by horse and buggy. From there he moved to a lumber camp near Sudbury and finally landed a job with INCO in underground construction until his retirement.
He met the love of his life (Francziszka) at the Polish Hall and married in 1953. He called his 4 daughters “Charlie’s Angels”. He was very generous and jack of all trades, helping out his daughters and friends with repairs and renos. He loved ballroom dancing, singing, walking, poetry, playing cards, reading history books & politics (CBC radio Cross Country Checkup his favourite), camping especially at Killarney, sports, animals, gardening (famous for his potatoes and garlic), soup making, arm wrestling(His doctor called him “strong man”. He was into nutrition and fitness before it became trendy. He taught us to be fit with the Charlie Atlas exercise program and studied the Healthful Living Digest. We were fortunate to enjoy his great sense of humour and wit. Karol was able to travel back to Poland many times and rediscover his family and homeland. He taught us to darn socks and sewing on the old manual singer sewing machine. He sewed his own curtains and own repairs. He taught his grandkids to play cards, volleyball and badminton playing until 90 when he lost his sight. We are left with great memories to cherish. He has passed on his strength, courage and love of life as his legacy. We give special thanks to Dr. Roch, Nurse Victoria, all the nursing staff, the PSW angels, housekeeping, maintenance and kitchen dining room staff of Extendicare Falconbridge and the PSW’s of Care Partners. Thank you for your devotion working in long term care with our most vulnerable.
A private gathering will be held with family and close friends at a future time. Cremation services provided by Simple Wishes of the North, Sudbury.
