Karen passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 20, 2023. Predeceased by her husband, Bill Whillans, who she considered her ‘soul mate’. Karen, daughter of Louise and Stanley Hunter, was born on March 22, 1942 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. She will be forever missed by her son, Jason (Marcella Redekop) and grandson Damian (O’Reilly). Also her siblings, Joyce Peat (widow of Randy Peat), of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Nancy Lee Hunter, of Elliot Lake, ON; Susanne (Michel) Marentette, of Kelowna, BC; and Robert Hunter of Regina, Sask. As a couple, Karen and Bill were very close to his brother, Robert Whillans (Janet), Ottawa, ON.
Karen and Bill were married close to 50 years and life together was a partnership. His work with the YMCA took them throughout Canada to Pictou (NS), Toronto (ON), Saskatoon (Sask) and overseas to Antigua, Zambia and other African countries. Their mission was to support and assist the Ys to operate independently.
Wherever they went, Karen entered into and worked with the communities, primarily in the arts and education sectors. They ended their work with a world tour accompanied by their son, Jason.
Their final landing place was the National Capital YMCA/YWCA.
Karen was active in many groups. Anyone who has met Karen will remember her wonderful smile and infectious laugh. She had an upbeat personality and always saw the positive side of a situation.
She was welcoming to newcomers and made everyone feel special. Karen was not only a people person but, for 7 years, fostered cats and kittens through the Ottawa Humane Society. Finally she adopted her friend, Beau. The family is happy to say that Beau has been relocated to a farm, where he will live out his life.
So many groups will mourn and miss Karen, including the ‘Busting Out’ Dragon Boat team (with whom she paddled for more than 20 years); The Knitting Goddesses (plus a new knitting group run by Karen at Amberwood Village Golf and Country Club); her Saturday walking group; the Arts and Artisans group; her book club, a private quilting group, the Kanata Quilt Guild and the art gallery at Amberwood Golf Club. Karen loved life!
The family especially appreciates the caring help over the last few months of special friends, Sandra Stafford and Carolyn Brennan.
Friends and colleagues will be invited to a Celebration of Life at a later date, probably in the Fall.
In Karen’s memory a donation to the ‘Busting Out’ dragon boat team (bank transfer to rpackham@icloud.com or cheque to Busting out Ottawa Dragon Boat Club, 1 Sellers Way Ottawa, ON K2H 7YS, the Ottawa Humane Society at 245 W. Hunt Club Road, Ottawa ON K2E 1S6 or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
