Obituary
Passed away peacefully at Southbridge Care Home on Thursday, October 5, 2023. Born in Toronto on December 26, 1951, Karen Margaret Dempster (nee Ruttan) of Owen Sound, formerly of Holland Landing, was in her 72nd year.
Beloved wife of Barry Dempster of Owen Sound, also formerly of Holland Landing. Loving sister of Arthur Ruttan, Leandra Ruttan (Brant Cook) and Kathleen Ruttan-Daigle (Paul). Dear aunt to Elora Cook (Josh Squires), Fritz Sarah Ruttan and Nicholas Ruttan. Karen will also be remembered by her loving friends from British Columbia, Alberta, Toronto and York Region.
Predeceased by her parents Arthur and Isabelle Ruttan.
Karen was an accomplished artist, writer and editor who loved books, visiting libraries and supporting indie bookstores. She cooked with adventure and creativity. Her garden was her sanctuary. She was a world traveler and spent countless hours visiting museums and art galleries. TIFF and Southlake Cinemania were her passions but her true passion was working alongside her husband and his writing. She had a gift for friendships, a love of beauty and a delightful sense of humour. She was the wind beneath our wings.
A Celebration of Karen’s Life will be held at the McMichael Art Gallery, 10365 Islington Avenue, Kleinburg, ON, 905-893-1121, on Tuesday, October 17, 2023. This will be a private service.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Grey-Bruce or the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library – Words Aloud would be appreciated. Online condolences can be sent to Karen ’s family by visiting her memorial at www.woodfuneralhome.ca.
