June Gerum Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear Mum, June Gerum.
Although unexpected, she passed peacefully at the age of 89.
Born in Bournemouth, England on June 26 th , 1935, she spent time in Scotland during WWII. As a teen she moved to London and then immigrated to Canada in 1956 where she met Dad (Hans, predeceased 2012). They married in 1957 and settled in Toronto where their son, John, AKA “Hansi”, was born. In 1963 they moved to Germany where their daughter, Heidi was born, but Mum’s love of Canada landed them back here in 1968. She was always thankful for Dad’s large and loving family of five sisters and one brother, living on the same street in Etobicoke with two of his sisters and their families for many decades. She moved to Milton in 2018 to be closer to her daughter Heidi and always spoke fondly of her friends and the staff at Seasons Retirement Home.
Mum’s grandchildren, Nicholas, Katrina, David, and Shayne meant everything to her. She was a wonderful Oma, sharing with them her love of the arts and the world around her. She kept granddaughter Anna (predeceased 2001) close in her heart always. Mum’s brother, Tony, and stepsister Margaret, both survive her and still live in England. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Karl (Maria) and many nieces and nephews throughout Canada, England, Germany, and the US. She had a special bond with her son-in-law Nick, both being Brits. They spent many hours discussing everything from politics to science over their shared love of anything sweet and a cup of tea and she always appreciated his kindness and patience.
Mum loved to be “by the water,” to which she was always drawn, no doubt influenced by her early days spent by the sea. Her other loves were children, with an amazing ability to connect with them, and doggies, whether her own or anybody else’s.
Early retirement allowed Mum and Dad to spend wonderful years together travelling and seeing family abroad. It also gave Mum the opportunity to expand on her love and natural talent for art and pursue it full-time. She was a long-time member of The Humber Valley Art Club and Neilson Park. She took endless classes and workshops, forever striving to find the next challenge in medium, colour or composition. It always made her happy to know that her art is displayed in homes throughout Canada,
the US and Europe. Through encouragement from fellow artists, she applied and was accepted into the Canada Society of Painters in Watercolour CSPWC/SCPA in 2010. She often said that art was truly her saving grace in retirement, to have a hobby she was passionate about, that absorbed, excited and challenged her everyday.
Also known as “Oma” to many beyond her grandchildren, she was thankful to all the friends and family for their kindness and for taking time and effort to make her part of so many memorable experiences as she got older.
Mum was truly a beautiful person. She saw the world around her in infinitely unique and creative ways. She was interested in anything and everything and made learning a lifelong experience to her last days. In later years, she often expressed what a wonderfully interesting life she had, and how loved she felt.
We will miss her dearly.
As to her wishes, donations to The Hospital for Sick Children would be appreciated.
