Sadly, Judy passed away peacefully at home in the company of family and friends on April 18, 2024 after a journey with a brain tumor. Judy was the daughter of the late Kathleen Chrystal and the late Merton Burritt, born on March 29, 1945 in New York City. Missing her are her loving husband Bruce McPherson, her son Brett (Niki Jirousek) and family in Ostrava, CZ, her sister Kathleen Abrahamson (Ernest) in New York City and many family relatives and friends in Canada, the United States and the Czech Republic.
Judy grew up in northern New Jersey, graduated from Pascack Valley High, a school whose alumni kept in touch over the decades. The high school had a student body of 2,500 and Judy was able to participate in various popular musicals presented by the students. After graduating from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Judy then started a music recording studio there with her first husband Chuck Gray. As a result of the Vietnam War, Judy and Chuck moved to Canada in 1968, a move which Judy never regretted. Judy and her husband owned and operated a music recording studio (Studio Six) in Montreal for 8 years, supporting the careers of various Quebec musicians.
While living and working in Montreal in 1978, Judy met Bruce and they planned a new life together. In 1980, they decided to buy and move to a small farm near Huntingdon, QC while continuing to work in Montreal. After a year of commuting, Judy traded her job in personnel recruiting for the adventure of life on a small farm. Although Bruce was raised on a farm, Judy soon assumed the day-to-day farm chores raising livestock, while becoming reacquainted with riding horses, a teenage activity she enjoyed while employed guiding young riders at a summer camp near Pottersville in New York’s Adirondack Mountains.
1983 saw a work transfer to Ottawa for Bruce and for Judy, a move to another farm near Wendover, Ontario for their accumulated horses and livestock. Life was busy during the decade; Judy took on the breeding of Great Pyrenees dogs in addition to the farm chores and son Brett went off to university in 1985. In addition, Judy and Bruce fostered 2 teenage girls for several years. Judy studied the use of homeopathic remedies to resolve some health problems encountered by her dogs and horses. Starting in 1989, in addition to the activity with the Great Pyrenees dogs, Bruce and Judy started breeding and raising purebred Clydesdale horses with all the related pleasures and tears over the next 30 years.
In 2003 Judy and Bruce moved to a farm near Glen Roy, continuing with the horses and breeding Cairn terrier dogs, a business started in 1998. The Glen Roy property was also well-suited for boarding dogs in their large house and Judy built up a loyal clientele who appreciated the care that their cherished older pets received at Cairndale Canine Inn.
Judy had a love of singing in choirs from her high school days and was active in choirs in University, in Huntingdon QC and locally with Centennial Choir in Cornwall where she also served on the board as secretary and president. In recent retirement years, the farm activity wound down and their move to a smaller home before the Covid crunch was the right decision.
Judy had a lifelong love of animals especially dogs and horses and felt fortunate to have had the companionship of various dogs all the years of her life.
As per Judy’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral services. Donations in remembrance can be made to Brave Hearts Riding Club (www.brave-hearts.ca) to assist the learning disabled.
As a Memorial to Judy, a tree will be planted in a memory woods. A tree grows – memories live. Condolences may be made online at www.munromorris.com
