It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our mom, Joyce Laird. She was not just a wonderful mother, grandma, great grandma, sister and friend, she was a lovely human being. Family always came first for her. Family was everything.
Our mom was born with a huge spirit and zest for life. She was a Yorkshire girl born and bred but her openness to adventure took her and her young family to live in Africa, Nicaragua and Western and Northern Canada. After raising her girls, she became a hairdresser. She went on to own and operate a hair salon in Canmore, Alberta – an adventure she took on by herself without knowing anyone in Canmore. It just felt right for her, and she was brave enough to do it.
Mom had a huge heart and over the years volunteered with the Women’s Crisis Line, the RIH auxiliary, and the cancer clinic. Helping others was important to her.
Mom’s most cherished memories were spent in the outdoors camping and boating with her daughter Bev, Mike and the kids. She also loved spending time in Smithers with Nichola and Tony. She had no problem sitting around a bonfire at -15C wrapped in blankets while sipping on a little bevvie. As long as she was surrounded by her family, she was happy.
She will be deeply missed by her two daughters, Beverley Russell-Sherwood (Mike), and Nichola Laird-McWhinney (Tony), her grandson, Matt Russell (Sasha), her granddaughter, Ali Reid (Stu), her great-granddaughter Bradley Russell, her sister Barbra McCullow (Peter) and her extended family in England.
She gave us wings and taught us to believe in ourselves. There is no greater gift to give. Fly free, Mom, breathe easy and know you will always be loved.
A special thanks to all the doctors and nurses on 6 North at RIH in Kamloops, BC for taking such good care of her over the last 6.5 weeks.
There will be no service at Mom’s request.
