Obituary
Joyce Doreen (Boulter) Strawbridge
How do you sum up almost 85 years of life and love? You don’t, but we will try. Joyce was born February 11, 1938, the youngest child of Grace and Harold Boulter in Magog, Quebec. She spent her early years surrounded by her many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Eastern Townships before moving as a young child to Galt, Ontario. Following in her sister Evelyn’s footsteps and with tutoring in Latin from her older brother, Ken, Joyce began her training as a registered nurse at the age of seventeen. She nursed for three years at Hamilton General and six years at Stratford General Hospital. Lake Huron was a favourite summer destination and also the place where she met the love of her life, Bill in 1958. After marriage and a honeymoon in northern Ontario Joyce and Bill settled in Stratford. The next twenty-five years were hectic as they raised their five children and built their beautiful home in the country. During that time, Joyce became an organic gardener, an avid seamstress, earned her pilot’s license, volunteered at the cancer society and sang in the church choir – all of this when she wasn’t running her children to their many different activities. In 1980, Joyce joined her husband Bill in their business doing the books and was responsible for trying to keep Bill on track – a big task! She enjoyed wood-working, earned the designation as a Nutritional Consultant and subsequently became a reflexologist. Joyce and Bill became avid “bikers” riding their Goldwing all over North America. They travelled over 300,000 kms, including trips to Alaska, Newfoundland (twice) and all over the United States and Canada. They spent thirty winters in Casa Grande, Arizona. In her spare time, Joyce was an outspoken supporter of complementary medicine and organic farming and wrote many letters to the editor on these topics. In later years, she took up oil painting and water colours. Joyce could also be found knitting, crocheting and doing cross stitch in the moments that remained. But in all the busyness of life, her greatest joy was her husband Bill, her children and the grandchildren and great-grandchildren that followed. Above all has been the knowledge and love of God and God’s guidance. In Joyce’s own words, “She goes to meet God with joy”.
Joyce is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Bill. She is also survived by her children Patty (Mike), Elaine, James (Cassie), Ron, Pam (Steve), her grandchildren Ryan (Rita), Meghan, Rachel (Quinn), Justin, Stacey (Adam), Chloe, Colton, Amelia (Shaquille) and Rhiannon (Alex). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Ronan, Reagan, Seamus, Lily, Tyson and Hazel.
