It is with great sadness that the family of Joyce Tyers announce her passing at the age of 96. Joyce was pre-deceased by her husband Donovan, and was the much-loved mother of Scott (Tracy) and Jady (Stewart), grandmother to Joseph (Ashley) and Sarah (Raoul), and great-grandmother to Logan, Lucas, and Arlo. She will be greatly missed by her many friends, in-laws, nieces and nephews, and neighbours.
Joyce Stibbs was born in New Westminster to Walter Stibbs and Mabel Bishop, and grew up with her older brothers Roy, Lyle, Tom, her nephews George, Ian, Jay, Tom, and nieces Barbara and Gail. Fond memories included having the day off school to celebrate the 1937 opening of the Pattullo Bridge, riding the BC Electric interurban streetcar, playing in the school bugle band, and working as a teenager at Delnor Frozen Foods, canning peas; her descriptions of that job sounded like “I Love Lucy’ in the chocolate factory. She attended Duke of Connaught high school, and received her teaching certificate in 1945 from the Provincial Normal School, where the curriculum included proper deportment for single young ladies entering the teaching profession. At the age of 19, she began her teaching career in a 2-room schoolhouse in Coldstream, where teaching duties included chopping wood for the fire-bellied stove which kept the classroom warm. She later moved to Prince George where she met Don, a 25-year-old World War II veteran; both were smitten, and they married in January 1949. They had to borrow $5 from her brother for the marriage licence, and a tie for Don to wear to the wedding. Times were hard in BC, so they decided to head east in search of work, and hitch-hiked across Canada, finally settling for awhile in Newfoundland, which always had a place in her heart, in part due to her memories of unlimited lobsters boiled in massive pots on the beach. They eventually returned home to BC, owned a convenience store in Burnaby, and in 1958 bought a house in Surrey for the grand total of $19,000.
Children Scott and Jady followed soon after, and Joyce became a full-time mother and home-maker, while Don travelled the province working in automotive supply. She made life-long friends in the neighbourhood, including the group of “bridge ladies” who played together once a week for decades, enjoying each other’s company, smoking like chimneys, and laughing over glasses of Calona Royal Red. She took up tennis, landscape painting, knitting, needlepoint, swimming in the backyard pool, and became a dedicated gardener. She kept up a lively, decades-long correspondence with international pen pals from Ireland, Australia, England, and India, and was thrilled when she was able to meet them in person. Once Don retired, they were able to travel and took trips to Australia, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Ireland, and the U.S., but their favourite way to travel was in BC with their trailer, motoring to parks and lakes where they could fish (it didn’t matter if they caught anything or not) and relax around a campfire each night. Don and Joyce spent 58 years together in the family home, until his death in 2016. Joyce remained in the house until 2022; she had created a beautiful garden filled with flowers, fruits, and vegetables, and loved nothing more than giving visitors a “2-bit tour”. She tackled the daily crossword puzzle well into her 90’s, called out the answers to Jeopardy, followed politics keenly but couldn’t ever find an elected politician that she actually liked, and had an established routine of enjoying a glass of Canadian rye whisky and ginger ale every night. We miss you, Mom, and hope that somewhere you and Dad are sitting in your little aluminum car-topper boat, with your fishing lines in the water, and big smiles on your faces.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
