Joseph Kevin Condon Obituary
As a boy, Dad had a rather protective farm dog named Kip. They were inseparable, which is how Joseph came to be known as Kip. In later years, Kip would always say that it stood for “keep it positive.”
Kip lost his own father when he was only ten, when he dropped dead of a stroke while working in the field. Kip’s older brothers served in World War II, but the war ended before Kip was old enough to serve. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years, including stints at a radar base in the north and an allied base in West Germany. In his early military days, he delivered a girl’s baby in a remote Ontario community. As a young man, he fell in love with Alberta, racing across the province on a motorcycle.
Kip and Cathy met on a blind date in Winnipeg. They got married in 1958. They loved to square dance. Kip was a square dance caller. Kip and Cathy established the first square dancing club in Germany. The German club members are still dancing to this day. Kip continued square dance calling in Canada well into his eighties.
Kip left the Catholic Church to marry a Protestant. At 88 years of age, his mother stopped blaming Cathy; it was Kip’s own fault that he would go to hell for leaving the Catholic Church, she said. He said some of his siblings were so far behind that they think they’re ahead. He would tease his sister, a nun, by asking when she was going to kick the habit.
Kip managed to navigate his way through European holidays, towing a camper with the Volvo through Swiss mountains and Roman traffic circles. He acted out words for foreign listeners who did not speak English, simulating skipping to buy a skipping rope. He wasted no time in chatting up fellow campers and inviting them over to meet his family.
Kip exuded charm. With his great sense of humour, he could get a smile out of anyone. He was a DIY enthusiast. He was always there to lend a hand with his children, whether it be building a cabin in the woods or helping to repair a fence. He shared his wisdom as well, with phrases like “you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar” and “what other people think of me is none of my business.”
In his younger days up north, he liked hunting and fishing. He once came home with his share of a moose, enough to feed his family all winter. He also fed his family by growing a big vegetable garden wherever they lived. He made pancake breakfasts on Sundays. He started cooking suppers for him and Cathy when he retired, and she was still working.
Kip was a dog lover. He came home with a puppy one day, to the delight of his small children. He rescued and trained a German shepherd cross when they were teenagers. He and Cathy trained a shepherd-wolf cross that Wayne brought home a decade later. He started riding a horse in his sixties, so that he could spend more time with Cathy. He competed in barrel racing for the first time when he was 68.
Kip was a runner. He went jogging in his sweat suit every day into his eighties. In the 1970s, his siblings teased him for “running around the neighborhood in his pyjamas.” On his 65th birthday, he ran 26 miles on country roads with Cathy following him in the car. He said that he wanted to run a marathon distance while he was still young.
Kip Condon is survived by Cathy, his wife of 66 years, his children Brenda, Bradly, and Wayne, his grandchildren Jennifer and Adam, and nine great grandchildren. His eleven siblings and one grandson, Cecil, all predeceased him.
