Joseph Isadorus Van Oort
October 10, 1929 – August 30, 2024
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Joseph Isadorus Van Oort in his 95th year.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Frances (Derks), his daughter Marilyn Lane (Fred), son Robert (Luciana), brother Tien and sister Corrie Bloemers, grand-daughters Lindsay-Jo, and Katlyne (Bogdan) Ghitulescu, four great grand-children, Aiden, Theo, Tristan and Aalayah, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his son, Richard.
Born in Heesch by Oss, Netherlands in 1929, Jo was the 5th eldest of 13 children. After WWII, he served in the Dutch army, before emigrating to Canada in 1952. He came to southern Ontario and worked on a farm for 2 years, then came to Sudbury to work for Inco. It was here that he met and married the love of his life, Frances. He retired as an Inco Plant Security/First Aid Officer in 1989.
Jo was a life-long resident of Mikkola Subdivision, where he built the family home. He served for many years as a volunteer firefighter as well as participating in many community organizations, such as the St. Stanislaus Cemetery Board, the church choir, Our Lady of Fatima school board, Camp Quality Puppeteers, and the CNIB. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3909 and Lockerby Legion Branch 564. Jo was a man of great faith, he had a dynamic personality and loved to visit with everyone; always having a kind word to say. Making people laugh, whether young or old, was a part of his charm. He made everyone feel they were important. He will be missed by many for his gentle, kind manner for touching those that he didn’t know by brightening their day, even with a short conversation; this was his special gift.
The family would like to sincerely thank the Maison McCulloch Hospice and their wonderful staff for their care, compassion, dignity and respect shown to him during his time there. Please know you are special people. Thanks also to the home-care nurses from Bayshore, especially Christie, whose professionalism and kindness was so greatly appreciated. Our thanks also to his incredible medical team, Dr. Punn, Dr. Lajeunesse and especially Dr. Centis, for their gentleness in providing great care.
He is resting at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home at 233 Larch Street in Sudbury. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00pm, with parish prayers at 7:00pm on Monday, September 2, 2024.
A funeral mass for Jo will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at 10:30am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Fr. Pat Woods officiating.
Cremation with interment in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Maison McCulloch Hospice and are appreciated.
