Obituary of John Patrick Smart
Slipped away into the ether without a sound on February 22, 2023, John Patrick Joseph (Andre) Smart aged 76. He was predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Magdalene Smart, brother Lawrence and sister Madonna.
John was originally from St. John’s. John was an educator, an avid reader, a movie buff and one of the best Toronto Maple Leafs fans you could hope to find, remembering the last time the Leafs won the Cup. John spent a short time as a Christian Brother and is a proud alumnus of Iona College in New Rochelle, New York.
John’s first marriage to Patricia Mullins from St. John’s was blessed with the arrival of their son Keith, who was always the apple of John’s eye.
The majority of John’s teaching career was spent in Happy Valley-Goose Bay at Our Lady Queen of Peace School. It was there that he met Regina, and the rest, as they say, is history.
In recent years John’s health took a bit of a turn, but he took it all in stride.
Left on this side to remember him are wife Regina, Son Keith and Daughter-in-Law Jenn, grand-daughter Katie, sisters Kathryn (Clarence) Marsh and Theresa Smart and brother Robert (Bernadette), Patricia Mullins and Robert Riendeau, Betty Mullins, nieces and nephews, friends too many to count and the students of whom he thought so much.

John’s family would like to acknowledge all of the medical staff who cared for him during this last part of his journey: Specialists Drs. Sheridan and Lush and Family Doctor Tamara Al-Tikriti and the hard working nursing staff of the Emergency Department.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gathering Place or any charity of your choice.
Out of an abundance of caution for my friends and family, I would like to ask that masks be worn to the visitation and the funeral mass.
