John passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2023, he will be missed by his family and many friends. John is survived by his three daughters, Leanne K. Johns, Kimberly Blakley, and Colleen Johns Quo Vadis; and four grandchildren Kaitlyn Rae Ryan (Eli), Cameron Johns (Alex), Reid Blakley (Ash) and Kendall Johns.
John was predeceased by his parents, Gus Johns, and Susan Johns (née Csada); and the love of his life, Carole Ann (née Parkes).
He met Carole Ann when his friends arranged to have him escort her on a blind date. From then on, he was devoted to her, and she became his wife of 58 years until her passing.
John, nicknamed «The Greek» by his college buddies, was naturally gregarious and had an abundance of good friends. He excelled at team sports and had many lifelong friends from his days playing football with The Rams, basketball, and hockey at the University of Saskatchewan. John also obtained his pilot’s license as a teenager and eventually bought his own plane.
John graduated with a degree in Commerce from the University of Saskatchewan, followed by an MBA from Berkeley in California. After several years of working for companies such as Xerox and Boise Cascade, John moved his family to Regina, SK and became a very well-liked Professor of Marketing at The University of Regina. At the same time, he also ran a market research firm and other businesses such as the Regina Magicuts franchise.
John continued to play hockey in an Old-Timer’s league and was part of a team representing Canada that travelled to Eastern Europe and played against the former Czech Olympic hockey team.
John and Carole loved their summers golfing in Whitefish, Montana as well as winters in Mexico and Palm Springs. He was the best father anyone could ask for and took joy in being «Bapa» to his grandchildren, playing an active role in their many interests. A lifelong dog lover, he was always ready to scratch an ear or join in on a nap.
The family would like to give special thanks to his close friends, Bob and Leah McDonald and Jack Ito for their support.
A time and location for a Celebration of John’s life will be announced in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s memory to Parkinson’s research or a charity of your choice.
