John Weaver Glass, beloved husband of Louise (nee Hofman), stepfather to Michael and Rebecca Wilson, and cherished grandfather to Adaline, Madison, Logan, and Norah, tragically lost his life on March 3rd, 2024 due to a short but hard-fought battle with ALS. He was born on August 17, 1952, to J.P. and Lydia Glass in Baltimore, MD.
John’s loving wife Louise exhibited unwavering strength and never left his side from the moment he received the tragic diagnosis.
John’s journey was marked by service and education. He dedicated 24 years of his life as a first responder firefighter in Anne Arundel County, MD, demonstrating courage and selflessness in the face of danger. His commitment to public safety extended beyond his firefighting career as he transitioned into academia. He pursued his passion for fire science technology, becoming a respected professor at Seneca College in Toronto, Canada. John’s expertise also led him to teach for prestigious institutions such as the University of Cincinnati, Bowling Green, and Empire State University.
Later, John brought his wealth of knowledge and experience to Orlando, FL, where he developed the fire science & emergency services degree program as a professor at Valencia School of Public Safety. His dedication to shaping the next generation of firefighters and public safety professionals left an indelible mark on his students and colleagues alike.
Outside of his professional pursuits, John found solace and joy in his lifelong love for bagpipe music. Despite picking up the instrument in his mid 60s, he mastered it with the guidance of Orlando’s finest pipers, forging lasting friendships along the way. His passion for life extended to sports, a love for soccer, football and later playing pickleball, until ALS prevented him from doing so.
John was the eldest son in his family, preceded in death by his parents, J.P. and Lydia Glass, and his brother, Donald. He is survived by his brothers Robert, Russel, George, and James, who will forever cherish his memory.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, John will be remembered for his kindness, honesty, dependability, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. He leaves behind a legacy of service and scholarship that will continue to inspire others for generations to come.
John will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace, knowing that his impact on the world will never be forgotten.
As per John’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.
However, a memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on March 23rd from 1-4 pm at the Twin Lakes Clubhouse, 4910 Twin Lakes Blvd, St. Cloud, FL 34772.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ALS Association so we can find a cure to this devastating disease.
