John passed away suddenly at the Montford Hospital in Ottawa, after being “under the weather for several months”. Carolyn, his beloved wife of 56 years, was at his side. He is survived by his three sons: Brad, married to Sarah Austin (from Fenelon Falls), Greg, and Geoff (both in Ottawa). John was a devoted Grampa to Ella and Sasha (Brad) and Chase (Geoff). He was a special brother to Jim Scollick (Barbara – St. Catharines) and brother-in-law to Don Cushing (Fergus, with partner Betty Wright, Barrie), John Cushing (Nancy – St. Catharines), Diane and Robert (both deceased – St. Catharines), along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was born in St. Catharines to Margaret and John Scollick, where he grew up. John joined the Armed Forces after High School, working mainly in Trenton ON as a Radar Technician. After transferring to Val d’Or, Que., he moved to Glen Williams, ON where he joined the Coast Guard, and then we ended up in Ottawa.
John was very involved with Scouts Canada from his early childhood years and continued through a multitude of years as a leader as well as a Group Committee member. He has received several awards during those years.
Trains, both real and model, were John’s passion. He was a loyal member of the HOTRAK Train Club for many years. As a family, and with many friends, we spent a multitude of happy times camping and canoeing, along with exploring much of North America in our trailer.
His funeral service will be held at Rideau Park United Church, 2203 Alta Vista Dr., K1H 7L9 (613-733-3156) on Saturday, October 19 at 2PM, followed by a combined reception and visitation. A Celebration of Life service will be held in St. Catharines, ON in the spring of 2025 (date to be determined). Dress is casual. Donations to Rideau Park United Church, Diabetic Society, and Scouts Canada would be gratefully received.
