It is with sadness, the family of John G. Hughes announce his passing which occurred peacefully and surrounded by his loving family at the Souris Hospital on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Born to the late William and Ellen Hughes on October 25, 1940, in Souris West, PE, he was aged 82 years.
John is predeceased by his best friend and wife Amy (nee Burke). He will be remembered as a loving and supportive father to his son’s Kevin (Sheila), Jimmy (Kim), David (Kim) & Dan (Christa) and his daughters, Kari (Mark) & Joy (Mario). He was a caring grandfather to Katelyn, Lem, Sean, Nathan, Trent, Cyd, Sam, Trey, Cameron, Jordan, Jacob, and great grandfather to Kamadie, Hudson, Lauren & Jed. In addition, he is survived by his cousin Ello.
He is predeceased by his first wife Mary Hughes (nee Chaisson), along with son, Terry MacSwain.
John was a hard worker, skilled tradesman and well respected within the community. He operated his electrical business for several years in Souris and was always willing to offer insight and his expertise when it came to his talents. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and was known for his kind and generous spirit. But above all, John had a great love for his family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them. He also enjoyed travelling on his motorcycle with Amy. They created many memories together that he cherished deeply. John was a loyal friend, a pillar of the community and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Resting at Dingwell Funeral Home where visiting hours will take place on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, from 5-8pm. A funeral Mass will be held at the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Souris on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at 11:00am with interment to follow in the St. Alexis Roman Catholic Church Cemetery, Rollo Bay. If so desired, donations in memory of John can be made to the St. Alexis Cemetery Fund or the PEI Humane Society.
