John Ernest «Johnny» Hovell
1942-2024
John
Ernest «Johnny» Hovell – 81, of Kentville,
passed away suddenly on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at home after his
morning walk. Born in Wolfville, he was a son of the late Charles and
Eileen (Keating) Hovell.
John’s interest for
agriculture stemmed from his childhood, growing up on their family
farm, and continued through his short career of trucking produce and
eggs from farms in the Valley, to restaurants across Halifax. He
continued his green thumb by crafting an immaculate garden year after
year and was so proud to be able to share the fruits of his labour
with family and neighbours, especially on the cart at the end of the
driveway for all to enjoy. He was equally as passionate about his
flower and rose gardens; and manicuring his perfect
lawn.
John had
a fulfilling career as a finish carpenter, he began his career working
with Mackie Keddy (Valley Builders), followed by Trimen Builders,
which he operated as a partner. He is well-known for his craftsmanship
and attention to detail. After his retirement, John certainly
didn’t hang up the hammer. He continued to craft projects
for friends and family, and was eager to lend a hand wherever he
could.
John
enjoyed nature, especially on his daily sunrise walks downtown
Kentville, greeted by familiar faces and conversation. He was
dedicated to his life-long friends and neighbours on Charles Street,
and was well known for not only tackling his own driveway during
snowstorms, but those around him as
well.
John was
a wealth of knowledge, and will be remembered for his quiet, observant
nature, his love for animals (especially cats) and deep love for his
family. John was an avid volunteer in his community; he served for
several years in the Port Williams Lions club. He was an
exceptional father, dedicated grandfather, and will be dearly
missed.
John is
survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Peggy; their children, Jeff
(Narda) Hovell, Fall River; Debbie (Steve) Proctor, Halifax; and
Sharon (Michael) MacDonald, New Minas; grandchildren, Cydney Proctor
(Martin Berthelot), Mackenzie (Peter) Feindel, Kirk Hovell (Layney
Gauthier), Kelly Hovell, Jill MacDonald (Shane Morse), Michelle (Alex)
Caldwell; and sister-in-law, Christine Hovell, New
Minas.
In
addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, George
Hovell; and sister-in-law, Colleen
Hovell.
Cremation has taken place and there
will be no visitation, by request. A funeral service (with a video
webcast available) will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31,
2024 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, with a reception to
follow. Interment will take place in St. John’s Anglican
Church Cemetery, Church Street. Donations in memory may be made to the
Heart and Stroke Foundation. Funeral arrangements have been
entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville. For online condolences or to view the video webcast, please
