Obituary
Joe Mirva of Danbury, SK, passed away at the age of 93, on December 12, 2023, at the Preeceville and District Health Centre, Long Term Care. Joe was born July 25, 1930, to parents Kazik and Mary (nee Yacyshyn) Mirva at the family homestead (NW 1⁄4 30-35-2 W2nd) two miles west and one and a half miles south of Danbury. Shortly after his birth his parents moved to the NE 1⁄4 30-35-2 W2nd, one mile west and one and a half miles south of Danbury.
He started school at age eight as his parents thought it best if he and his younger brother, Bruno, started together. He attended Brush Valley School located one and a half miles west of Danbury. At age 15, he left school to help earn money to support the family.
Joe worked several jobs through the years. He started off working on a threshing crew for Mike Rahn when he was 14 and would cut wood with his brothers during the winter months. In 1946 he worked in a lumber mill 20 miles north of Danbury. He also worked cutting and hauling pulp in The Pas and Flin Flon, Manitoba and in the fall of 1958 worked in a lumber mill at William’s Lake, BC. Joe always returned to help work the family farm during the summer months. In 1958, his parents retired to Hyas, and he and his brother Bruno took over the farming completely.
Joe moved to Regina the fall of 1958 to work in a steel fabricating shop. In the fall of 1959, his began working as an Ironworker. Joe was initiated as a Journeyman Ironworker into the Iron Workers Union Local 771 in Regina, SK in 1960 and proudly became a Lifetime member in July 1997. Joe worked on different construction sites while Ironworking through the winters often being away for long stretches of time. One of the last places he worked that was further away during the winter was in Wallaston Lake. After that he would do short jobs closer to home and summers would find the family camping at McBride Lake while he would carpool with other ironworkers to Hudson Bay to work during the shut down of the lumber mills for equipment change-overs. Joe’s last job was in the late 80’s when he worked along with his brother, Bruno, and his son Kerby, during the construction of the Shand Power Station at Estevan, SK.
In 1955, at a barn dance, he met the love of his life, Lorraine Yaganiski. Joe and Lorraine were married on September 4, 1959, in Hyas, SK. Joe and Lorraine started their family in 1961 with the birth of their eldest son, Darrell. He was followed in 1963 by Denise and in 1968 by Kerby. They lived in Regina until the spring of 1964 when they moved to what became their permanent home, 40 acres of land a half mile west of Danbury purchased from Mike Bossy. They were mixed farmers raising cattle, pigs and chickens as well as growing various cereal grains and canola. Money was scarce so Joe would work during the winter months on different job sites as an iron worker and then return to work the farm during the summer. During this time, first Lorne Kucharyshen and then Vern Kucharyshen stayed with Lorraine on the farm to help with the chores and with looking after Darrell and Denise. At a very early age Joe developed a very strong work ethic which remained with him throughout his life.
Joe worked hard but he also took time to play hard and enjoy life. He was well known and will always be remembered for his incredible sense of humour. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He always enjoyed visiting and having a drink with them often over a few games of cards. During the winter months, he and Lorraine would pack up the kids and an ice cream pail of sandwiches to enjoy a day of ice fishing on Ranch Lake (now named Parr Hill Lake) with his family. During the summers weekends would often be spent with groups of friends camping and fishing at Townsend Lake. In 1983, they leased and later bought a lot and built a cabin at Elbow Lake, which became a favorite summer hangout. Many good friends and memories were made up north during those times. One thing Joe also always loved to do in winter was cut wood. There was nothing better than finding a nice bluff of birch, getting a permit and heading out early on a winter morning with Lorraine to cut a truck load of wood.
Community was another thing that was important to Joe. Over the years he was a member and sat on the executive of the Danbury Hall Committee and on the local Wheat Pool Committee. He was also a councillor several years for Division 5, R.M. of Clayton No. 333. Joe also served as a trustee on the school board and was the last volunteer Fire Chief for Danbury area until the volunteer crew was disbanded.
Most important of all to Joe was his family. When he met Lorraine, he had found his soulmate. They did everything together and were an amazing team. It wasn’t unusual to see them touring around checking out the crops. As their family grew so did Joe’s pride in that family. He greatest treasures were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he cherished every moment he could spend with them.
Joe enjoyed a long and full life and for the most part a healthy one. He fought and survived cancer twice. In the last 5 or 6 years Joe’s biggest challenge was his ever worsening eyesight along with some other health issues. But he pushed on adapting to these changes with amazing determination. However, as his health worsened, he was less and less able to manage at home. After a hospital stay, he was admitted to the Preeceville Health Centre – Long Term Care on December 19, 2022, where he resided until he left to join Lorraine. Joe was always very grateful for the amazing care the staff there provided.
Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lorraine; parents, Kazik and Mary; parents-in-law, Metro and Nita Yaganiski; siblings, Walter, Addie, Jean, Antonia, Stella, Rose, Bruno and May; brothers-in-law, Herb Van Schyndel, Ray Pilkington, Nick Kucharyshen, Fred Sakaluk, John Steranko and Fred Dickhut; sisters-in-law, Shirley Sieben, Gloria Lozinski and Sonia Sowa.
Joe will be lovingly remembered by his children, Darrell and Bonnie, Denise, Kerby and Fran; his grandchildren, Bryan, Hunter, Daniell and Allyssa; his great-grandchildren, Sophia and Avery; sister-in-law, Faye Mirva; as well as many, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
In his honour, the Funeral Service will take place at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 19, 2023, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Velda Dahlin as Celebrant. Interment to follow at the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK.
