Obituary
In loving memory of Joan Mary Corrine McKenney who passed away peacefully in her 86th year on July 21st, 2023, with her family by her side.
Joan embraced life to the fullest. She was the beloved spouse of the late Dr. Donald J. McKenney and together they raised their children in Windsor before retiring in Owen Sound, Ontario. A devoted parent, Joan leaves behind her children; Daniel, Jocelyn, Jennifer (Trent Smith). Proud Nana to Andrew, Nicole, Danielle, Adam, Noah, and great-grandmother to Luke. Joan will also be dearly missed by her best friend turned sister-in-law, Barbara Sheppard.
Joan had a zest for life-long learning evidenced by her love of books, The Globe and Mail, and discussing politics (probably with more passion than most politicians)! Late night dinner parties full of lively debate while savouring fine red wine were shared by many. Her curiosity knew no bounds; She was a seeker of knowledge and had a genuine interest in everyone’s life stories.
After settling in Owen Sound, Joan immersed herself in the community and volunteer work, finding herself many new friendships. Great memories were made in one of her favourite Owen Sound spots, Harrison Park. Best described by her grandchildren, Joan leaves a legacy that includes being an aspiring chess opponent, political advisor, mini putt pro, gifter of books, and a master mac’ n’ cheese maker!
To celebrate Joan’s wonderful life, all friends and family are welcome to gather at 11am Saturday, July 29th for a Funeral Mass at St. Mary’s & The Missions Catholic Church in Owen Sound followed by an informal gathering. In lieu of flowers, donations to her preferred charity ALS (als.ca/) will be appreciated.
