COLLEE, Joan Dora Margaret – Passed away peacefully at the St. Catharines General Hospital on Saturday July 13, 2024 at the age of 80. Beloved mother of Chris (Lisa) Collee, Andy Collee and Mari-Anne Collee. Beloved grandmother of Asha, Ciera, Nicole, Allison, Grace, Ava, Cooper, Patrick, Jade, Araya, Harley, Tyler, Raven, Echo Rae, Paige Rae, Charlie, and Wednesday. Loving Great-Grandmother to Carter, Vincent, Jocelyn, Draven, Clayton, Joseph, Cassien, Lillian, Kingston, Nazareth, and Zack.
Dear sister of Su-Anne (Keith) Hodgkinson, the late Robert Spence (2023) and the late Nancy Spence (1974). Predeceased by her husband Richard Collee (2010), her children Ricky Collee (2021), Christina Collee (1998), Claudette Collee (2015), Travis Collee (2008) and Charlie Collee (2006). Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
Joan will be remembered as a woman with a heart of gold who told it how it was and always managed to stay positive. She exemplified the meaning of fortitude in her life from raising eight children, freezing in arenas as the perfect hockey mom, putting herself back through school to be a nurse, surviving a brain aneurysm, defying the laws of aging by chopping firewood into her 70s, surviving a stroke, and fighting for as long as she did with lung cancer. All done her way with a positive outlook and a little bit of sass.
Joan spoke fondly of memories of going to her Grandma’s farm as a child and spoke often about her trips to PEI and Iceland as an adult.
Joan had an affinity for animals, quilting, sewing, knitting and most of all her family. She would always be the one you would call when you were under the weather as she always had the best home remedies for our ailments. You could always count on her to show up exceedingly early for anything she was asked to do whether it was a ride to work or to be a spectator for your school play.
She treasured most the visits she had with family whether they were at her house with her daughter Mari-Anne for her weekend stays, a coffee date with one of her granddaughters, a phone call with one of her sons, or if it was to go visit her sister to make fruitcake and have afternoon tea. She loved every minute with family and made friends everywhere she went. She was a pure spirit that made connections and left impressions.
To use a quote from one of her favourite bears, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
-Winnie the Pooh
Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial donation to The Walker Family Cancer Centre of St. Catharines. Joan’s journey with cancer was made easier with the staff there and in the oncology wing of the hospital. Thank you to those who cared for her. You truly meant a lot to her and her family.
