Obituary
Joan Ann Charabin – December 22, 1932 – September 09, 2024
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Joan Ann Charabin, of Oakville, Ontario on September 09, 2024 at the age of 91 years. Joan was a devoted wife, loving mother, two-time grandmother, kind, and generous spirit, who left this world after an extended illness.
Joan was born in a working-class neighbourhood of downtown Montreal near Windsor Station. Joan was the daughter of Madge Johnson and George Abbott who immigrated to Montreal in the 1920s. Joan was the youngest of two siblings Eric and Madge. Unfortunately, as time passed, her neighbourhood no longer exists.
Joan’s formative years came to life in Verdun where she attended and graduated from Verdun High School. Early life in downtown Montreal was an exciting place to be when you attended school with ‘soon to be’ NHL legends and the bright lights of a great city. Joan was both a big city girl and country girl in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Joan had many lifelong friends in both environments and particularly loved horse riding at the Mayer family farm outside Mansonville, Quebec.
In the 1950’s, Joan could have been a great ambassador to the merits of growing up in Montreal as we recall many of her detailed stories of the fabulous places to enjoy everyday life to the max. A lifelong Montrealer knows all the hidden secrets away from the crowds.
Joan began her professional career working at Northern Electric where she developed life-long friendships with her co-workers. Joan enjoyed many trips to Lake Memphremagog, Plattsburgh Beach on Lake Champlain, New York City, Atlantic City and many other favourite short holiday destinations.
Joan put her career aspirations on hold to fully dedicate herself to her family. Her passion for cooking/ entertaining, the outdoors, travelling, bridge, theater, and the world of antique collecting were hallmarks throughout her life.
It was in Montreal where she met the love of her life, Kasimir “Kash” Leonard Charabin. Kash was a new hire pilot with Trans Canada Airlines and was formally a gentleman from rural Saskatchewan. They married July 12, 1958 and eventually moved to Burlington, Ontario. Kash had suddenly passed away on January 16, 2023 and they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last summer.
Joan had been living at Burloak Long Term Care for the past few years and has made it through Covid isolation in no small part due to the constant, loving, attention of her husband. Her wide, bright smile who could light up an entire room was her trademark and won the hearts of the Burloak Long Term Care staff including the PSWs, nurses, doctors, and supporting staff. Our family is very appreciative for the love, care and compassion provided to our mother at the Burloak Long Term Care.
Joan is survived by her children, Geoff (Carmen), Alison (Bruce), and Jennifer (Cam), and by her two beautiful grandsons, Kasimir and Henry.
Joan’s life was full of love through good and bad times, and her kind spirit lives on through the family and friends she has touched.
A service will be held Wednesday, October 02, 2024, at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd. W. Oakville, Ontario. Visitation from 1-2pm, service at 2pm, reception to follow.
Kash and Joan have supported many charities over the years, so in lieu of flowers, those so inclined are encouraged to donate any amount to the charity of their choice.
