It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our Mother, mentor and best friend Jeannie Leger.
Jeannie was born to Jessie and John Cochrane in Paisley, Scotland on February 19, 1925. In her youth she lived in Inverness. She then moved to Glasgow, Scotland until she married her Canadian soldier, Patrick Léger there on the 6th of October 1943, Jeannie traveled to Canada on the Letitia a ship full of war brides in the summer of 1946. They arrived at Halifax Pier 21 where she and other women were immediately boarded onto a train and headed west. Jeannie’s destination was River Valley, Ontario. Jeannie’s main interests and passion apart from her family to whom she was a devoted and grandmother, were blueberry picking, reading, and bicycling.
In later years Jeannie enjoyed cooking; she was well known for her gingerbread cake. She was once requested to mail a cake to Scotland. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Jeannie. She enjoyed playing cards and watching wrestling. She loved receiving friends and family into her home to enjoy a cup of tea. There was never no lack of conversation, she enjoyed retelling stories and events that had happened to her during her lifetime. Mom had a zest for life, she was our Betty White of the family.
Jeannie is survived by daughters, Margaret Gauvreau, Joan Léger, Helen Léger (Mark Dally), Laurette Duguay (Yvon); son Denis Léger (Susan), daughter in law Vigi Léger; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada and Scotland.
Predeceased by her parents Jesse and John Cochrane; husband Patrick Léger; daughter Patricia Giroux (Alcide), sons Walter, Robert, son in laws John Gauvreau and David Amyotte; sisters Jesse Blackley, Mary Scotland Tommy and Agnes Ross.
The family would like to thank the staff of West Nipissing General Hospital, Doctor Beaucage and Father Gérald Lajeunesse. A special thank you to Crystal Legault and Camille Marleau for their compassionate care. As per her wishes a private ceremony will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Jeannie has requested that donations be made to the veterans.
