It is with sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Jean
Margaret MacPherson at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital on
February 17, 2023 with family by her side. Jean was born on August 12,
1939 in Whitchurch, a town north of Shropshire, England to parents
Robert and Alice Matthews.
At a young age, Jean left her family and moved to London
where she joined the Royal Air Force. She was employed as a Teletypist
and was quite proud of her role. In 1967 Jean moved to Canada where
she met her future husband Samuel Blaise MacPherson. There was a
whirlwind romance resulting in a marriage shortly thereafter in 1968.
After working in Vancouver and Toronto they settled in
Winnipeg where she worked for the Royal Canadian Air Forces as a
Civilian in a dental office. After retirement Jean and Sam
spent time in Arizona before moving to Antigonish in 1994 with the
sole purpose of being closer to family.
Jean was incredibly proud of her British heritage and would
often share stories from back home. She had a special connection with
those she met who were connected to England. Jean’s accent
always gave her away and she would feel such a sense of pride whenever
she was asked if she was from England. She would often smile brightly
and answer «how can you tell?» She loved that she still had
that piece of home after so many years.
Jean and Sam loved to travel over the years. They enjoyed
experiencing different cultures and valued the people they met along
the way. Golfing was a large part of their life and it was obvious
Jean loved the outdoors appreciating the beauty of nature and its
surroundings. Jean was a very talented knitter, enjoyed sewing,
crossword puzzles, playing cards and board games. Most importantly she
loved spending time with family and friends and valued those
friendships.
Due to a decline in health Jean moved to The Maples
Supportive Living Retirement Home in November 2018. It was there that
Jean had little worries. She was treated like family by staff and she
made some very special friendships. Her stories and sense of humour
will certainly be missed by both staff and residents.
Jean is survived by her brother David (Anne) Matthews,
Shropshire, England; her MacPherson in-laws Elwin, Harvey (Anne), Jack
(Patricia), Fr. Gary, Sr. Jovita of Antigonish and David Labun of
Millinocket, Maine. She also leaves behind a large extended family of
nieces and nephews. Jean was especially close to her niece Anne Marie
Dobbin and her family and her nephew Joe (Sylvia) MacPherson and their
children Hawley, Reid, Tori and Brody whom she loved dearly and
treated as though they were her grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Jean was predeceased by her husband Sam
of 34 years, parents-in-law Alex Sam and Mary MacPherson, brothers and
sisters-in-law Gordon, Joseph (Edna), Margie, Douglas (Bernadette),
Roderick James, and Alexander MacPherson and Mary
Labun.
Cremation has taken place. No visitation upon request. A
private memorial for friends and family will be held at a later
date.
Sincere thanks to paramedics, ER, ICU and Palliative Care
nurses and staff at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital who cared
for Jean. Thanks to Dr. Glenn Gallivan for the care provided to Jean
over the years.
Thank you to the entire staff at The Maples for their
patience and understanding of Jean’s condition and the
respect which they gave her during her time there. It is certainly
appreciated and will never be forgotten.
Special thanks to Dr. Jane Ann Howard who supported us
through Jean’s sudden and brief illness. Jean was fortunate
to be under Dr. Howard’s care in her last few
days.
Thanks also to Frank Cormier for his expertise and guidance
with arrangements for Jean. We appreciate all you have done to make
the process easier for us.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The
Women’s Resource Centre where Jean shared her time and love
of knitting with women in The Creative Circle.
