Melinda Faustina Jean Hamlyn (nee Stinson)
Jean Hamlyn, a cherished mother, grandmother, and community leader, passed away peacefully on August 30th, 2024. Born on October 9, 1939, to Grenville and Marion Stinson of North Gower, Jean was a Thanksgiving blessing to her family and a radiant presence throughout her life. Jean grew up with her brother David and sister Janet, living in Ventnor and later Ottawa. It was in Ottawa that she met her beloved husband, Judge Peter Dean Hamlyn, with whom she shared a deep and enduring love for 55 years. Together, they built a life dedicated to community service and family. Jean’s passion for public service began early. As a working mother and Municipal Counselor in Orangeville, she advocated for a municipally run daycare, which continues to bear her name. Her commitment to community welfare extended to her roles in Nepean and as an adjudicator on the Liquor License Board of Ontario.
Upon moving to Oxford-on-Rideau, she served with distinction as a Municipal Counselor, Deputy Reeve, and Reeve, improving the lives of residents in Oxford-on-Rideau and the joint counties of Leeds and Grenville. Jean was deeply involved in her church communities, serving as an Elder at Tweedsmuir Presbyterian Church in Orangeville, St. Timothy’s Presbyterian Church in Ottawa, and St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Kemptville. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her in her many roles and endeavours. Jean’s vibrant personality, marked by wit and humor, endeared her to all who knew her.
She was the heart and soul of her family—a devoted wife, a loving mother to her daughters Melinda (Martin West) and Tory (Robert Shawyer), and a doting Nana to her grandchildren Kathleen and Andrew Shawyer. Her affection extended to her sister Janet (Alton Whitehorne), niece Janine (Dale Visser), and grandnieces Madalyn and Jordyn Visser. Jean is predeceased by her husband Dean and her brother David (Jean). She will be profoundly missed by her surviving family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. The family extends their deepest gratitude to Dr. Goindi, Nurse Caroline, and the Home and Community Care Support team for their compassionate care.
Special thanks are also due to Andrea Guzzo-Lehman and the team at Waterford Grand Retirement Residence for their support during this challenging time.
A memorial service celebrating Jean’s remarkable life will be held on November 23rd, 2024 at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Kars, Ontario at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Ottawa Humane Society in Jean’s memory.
Jean’s legacy of love, service, and laughter will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched
