Jean Shaw Fox (nee Stevenson)
Jean passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family at Kingston General Hospital on the sunny Sabbath morning of October 6, 2024. Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband of 64 years, Basil, in 2023, by her parents Archie and Isabella, and by her grandson Trevor. She will be remembered by her four children: Stephen (Mary), Susan, Lesley (Rob), and Chris (Ruth), by her seven grandchildren: Heather(Chris), Carrie(Toby), Laura (Adam), Derek (Amra), Talitha (Andrew), Graham (Gayatri), and Andrew (Chris), and by her 5 great grandchildren: Alice, Gabriel, Lillian, and the 2 Rory boys!
Jean was born on June 25, 1934 in Glasgow, Scotland. She trained as a nurse and as a midwife in Glasgow, before immigrating with her nursing friends to “explore the world”, beginning in Canada, and wanting to go to Australia as well; however, in 1957 she met the love of her life, Basil, at the Tartan Club in Hamilton, and Canada then became her home. Jean was trained as the quintessential “call the midwife” in the 1950s and was very much a trailblazer, as Canada did not recognize midwifery in those early years in the same way Scotland did. She volunteered as a lactation consultant in her later years, as she was one of a minority of moms in the 50s and 60s who nursed her babies in Canada, and knew the importance of breastfeeding. Aside from nursing and midwifery, Jean had “side careers” in a bookstore, in photography, in art(oil painting, charcoal sketching), in quilting, in crocheting, in knitting, in writing (a published short story writer), in baking, and in scrapbooking. Jean was always a creative artisan who loved to perfect a craft, and then move on to something new.
Jean and Basil had a wonderful retirement, lawn bowling together in Cobourg, attending Probus meetings, and walking the beach in Florida in the winter months. Some of Jean’s favourite joys included knitting intricate sweaters for her grandchildren with tractor and animal designs, reading voraciously, watching golf games with Basil, watching Jeopardy, and completing countless sudokus and crosswords. The church was very central to Jean’s life and informed her strong sense of advocacy for the marginalized in the world. Jean was a lover of all sacred and Celtic music.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Aspira Royale Place in Kingston, and the 10th floor Connell medical team at Kingston General Hospital for their deep caring and empathy.
The immediate family will gather for a private service at Wartman Funeral Home, Kingston.
Donations in Jean’s memory cay be made to Trinity United Church, Cobourg. Condolences and donations may be forwarded online through wartmanfuneralhomes.com.
No one will ever replace our beloved “flower of Scotland”, but those who knew Jean have benefitted from her wisdom through the years. Please share and enjoy this favourite recipe of mom’s Paisley shortbread as you remember “wee Jeanie”:
Paisley Shortbread (Jean Shaw Fox):
Ingredients: 8 ounces of butter(it must be butter)
4 ounces of sugar
4 ounces of corn starch
12 ounces of all purpose flour
Directions: Cream butter and sugar thoroughly. Gradually work in dry ingredients. Turn onto a floured surface and knead until smooth. Turn into an 8 by 8 inch pan.
