Obituary of Jay Halliday
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Gerald “Jay” James Halliday announce his passing which occurred peacefully on Monday, December 23, 2024 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, NB surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Somersworth, NH, USA, on May 8, 1964, he was the son of the late Arthur Halliday and Viola Paul-Halliday-Hamilton (Peters). Jay was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend to all who had the privilege to know him.
When growing up in his younger years in Saint John, his passion was playing hockey. As the years went on his passion then turned toward the one and only love of his life, Shelley. Their love for each other for the next two years brought forward a marriage of 40 years, two beautiful daughters Jenn and Mandy, three grandchildren to which he loved dearly and a home in Hampton where they continued to reside until his passing. Jay also loved pets and had many over the years, but his fondest was his pet TT “Tia” as she brought him so much love, joy and comfort. He was a true dedicated Maple Leaf fan in which he would bet with his neighbor Benny Boy. As the years went on, he enjoyed going to watch the Saint John Flames with his friend Ronnie and eventually they would purchase yearly season tickets. With Jay’s overpowering voice, he was guaranteed to be heard, especially with his catchy phrases such as “HOLE-EEEE” and “Go WAAAAY”.
He truly was in his element outdoors for work and play whether on the land or water. From hobby farming, hunting rabbits and partridge as a youth all the way to deer hunting in Erbs Cove and on to the Cape Breton Highlands for family moose hunts. There he found one of his favorite hunting locations, his sweet spot at Campbell Lake that was later known as “Jay’s Lake”. Unknown to Jay, his final moose hunt in September 2024 in Northern NB with his brother Mike provided them both with quality time and one of the largest cows ever. The “Honey Hole” near Ingonish Lake provided the best trout usually with his bestie Floyd (aka CS Mantracker) on his heals. He also enjoyed smelt and hake ice fishing on the Kennebecasis River as well as mackerel fishing with his brother-in-law Graham in Pocologan, NB. Jay also enjoyed his time spent with family and friends down country at the trailer in Pocologan.
He took to the woods; harvesting, clearing, cutting and forestry management. Jay supported his family from the lands. Due to his diminishing health, he had to change his career path, he established himself in the tire and automotive industry. He took this to another level when he established Southern NB Discount Tire & Automotive Ltd with his wife and daughter Jennifer by his side. The family run business and employees became his second family who looked forward to seeing, laughing and spending time with him.
Jay is survived by his loving wife Shelley Halliday (Teare) of Hampton, NB; daughters: Jennifer Garnett (Karl) of Hampton, NB and Mandy Scott (Mike Morrison) of Hampton, NB; grandchildren: Carlee Scott, Breea Scott and Hunter Garnett; brother Michael Halliday (Andrea D’Eon) of Kingston, NB; sisters: Charlotte Paul (Howard Zwicker) of Wolfville, NS and Suzie Paul of Windsor, NS; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents, Jay was predeceased by his birth parents Gerald and Linda Paul; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clyde and Cecilia Teare; and stepfathers Danny McCarthy and Victor Hamilton.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541) 1063 Main Street Hampton, NB, where visitation will be held on Sunday, Dec 29th from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm. The funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, December 30th, 2024, from Reid’s Funeral Home chapel. Interment will take place in the spring at Little Lepreau Cemetery, Little Lepreau, NB.
The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff of the SJRH Cardiac ward for all their care over the years. Your kindness and compassion shown towards Jay and his family will not be forgotten.
