In Loving Memory of
Jane Evon (O’Brien)
Herring
1941 – 2023
«Music has been a big part of
my life.»
~Jane Herring

Born in Halifax in
1941, to the late Earl Sr. and Rhoda (Baker) O’Brien, Jane
was the eldest of five children. She will be deeply missed by her
siblings, Wilma (Doug, deceased) Lummiss, Huntsville, Ontario, Nova
(John) Campbell, Waterloo, Ontario, Doretta (Gary) MacDonald, Bedford
and extended family members. Jane was predeceased by her brother, Earl
O’Brien Jr.
Mom married the love
of her life, Harry Herring Jr. (deceased) on September 25, 1965, in
Truro. Family was of the upmost importance to her and said she loved
being a mother to Melanie (Peter) Melanson of Uigg, Prince Edward
Island, Nova Herring (John Elliott, deceased) of Wellington, and Craig
(Amy) Herring of Truro. Jane was a devoted Nana to Devon,
Mackenzie, Jorja, Jesse, Karyn and Bentley as well as the numerous
Children in Care who called her
‘Nana’.
Jane grew up in the
Salvation Army and played trumpet in the Salvation Army band. She has
always loved music and through the years also sang with various church
choirs, Mel-0-dees Barbershop Chorus, Happy Harmonies, Cantabile
Singers, and played with the Marigold Ukulele players.
Jane was educated as a
Registered Nurse at the Grace Maternity Hospital, Halifax (1963). She
proudly worked as an RN at ‘the Grace’ (Halifax),
Catherine Booth Hospital (Montreal), Victoria Public Hospital
(Fredericton), Colchester Regional Hospital (Truro), VON
(Colchester-East Hants), and Cedarstone Enhanced Care (Truro). Jane
and her RN classmates recently celebrated their 60th anniversary of
nursing with a reunion. Jane made many lifelong friends from her
‘training’ and nursing days.
A talented seamstress,
Jane found great joy in sewing her own clothes as well as wedding
dresses, prom dresses, pow wow regalia and various repairs that would
make their way to Nana’s house. Nana could fix
anything!
Volunteering and
community were an integral part of Jane’s life. She was a
member of the Glenwood Christian Church, Truro, and later attended
Mill Village Church of Christ. Jane taught Sunday school, Bible Hour,
and held a Ladies Bible Study at her home. She received her 50-year
pin in recognition for her years of Girl Guides and Trefoil Guild.
Jane volunteered for 35 years as a Firemenette (Auxiliary) for the
Cobequid District Fire Brigade (past president). Jane and Harry
enjoyed many years of Curling together at the Truro Curling Club. Jane
also curled with a Ladies group at the Brookfield Curling
Club.
Mom loved spending the
summers at the cottage that she and dad established in 1972, in
Seafoam. Jane could strike up a conversation with anyone and as a
result everyone she met became a friend. Her kind heart and gentle
spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Jane was reunited with
her Heavenly Father and husband on December 8, 2023. The family would
like to thank the Care Teams who cared for Mom at the Colchester East
Hants Health Centre, Major Bruce Jennings, End of Life Doula, Cindy
Kinkaid and the numerous friends and family who visited the hospital,
called, messaged, and sent cards.
Arrangements have been
entrusted to Mattatall Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro,
where the family will receive friends from 3-5 pm on Friday, January
5, 2024. A Celebration of Life will take place 2 pm on Saturday,
January 6, 2024 at the Salvation Army Corps, 14 Outram Street, Truro,
Major Bruce Jennings officiating. Webcasting of the service will begin
at 1:55 pm. Interment will take place at a later date in Old Barns
Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to Hospice Society or a charity
of your choice are welcomed. Public messages of condolence may be sent
