James Sloss Obituary
In Loving Memory of
James William Sloss
July 22, 1945 – May 9, 2024
James William Sloss passed away peacefully with his wife Sharon by his side on May 9, 2024 at the age of 78.
He was born on July 22, 1945 to the late Elwood and Betty Sloss (nee Lochead).
He is survived by his loving wife Sharon Sloss (nee Smith),
his children Christy (Duane) Deschamps and Bill Sloss,
grandchildren Emily and James Sloss,
sister Mary Lynn McQuarrie, brother-in-law Richard Grenon,
nephews Ronald (Mickey) McQuarrie and John Grenon,
nieces Amy (Gord) Morgan and Katherine (Dave) Pearson.
Predeceased by his sister Susan and brother-in-law Donald McQuarrie.
Jim grew up in Spring Bay enjoying the freedom of the outdoors to its fullest. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Laurentian University, graduating Magnum Cum Laude. He taught high school at Garson Falconbridge for 2 years before moving back to the Island with Sharon. This was the beginning of a 31 year career of teaching business subjects and later co-op education at Manitoulin Secondary School. With the help of his students, he very successfully raised money for the completion of the tennis courts and a new gym floor at the school by organizing ducky races. He developed lifelong friendships with many of his students.
Jim married his best friend, Sharon in 1970. A first date of ice fishing on Lake Manitou set the stage for the next 53 years. trip across Europe on a motorcycle, moose hunting, curling, salmon fishing and trips to the hunt camp made for an exciting life for both of them.
Jim’s passion for enhancing the sports fishery on Manitoulin was evident in his many years of work as Chairperson of the United Fish & Game Clubs of Manitoulin. He worked with other very dedicated members to establish a fish hatchery. He was also the Secretary of the Gore Bay Curling Club for many years and help secure Wintario grants for the completion of a new curling rink for the town. Many years as a member of the Rotary Club were also a source of enjoyment for him.
He and Sharon spent probably their most memorable times farming the family farm together for 30 years in a cow/calf operation.
Children and grandchildren made his life complete. He was also happiest when he was sharing his knowledge and love of the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his family and friends.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. C. Wilson, the staff of Manitoulin Lodge and the Mindemoya Hospital for their kindness, wonderful care and their love. It will never be forgotten.
A memorial service will be held this summer.
If you wish to make a donation in Jim’s memory, donations to the Gore Bay Manitoulin Lodge Auxiliary, the Gore Bay Medical Centre or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
