James William «Jim»
Chipman – 93, Bass
River, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on Sunday morning,
September 24, 2023, at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, QEII,
Halifax. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Harvey and Evelyn
(Backman) Chipman.
Jim served with the Royal Canadian Army from 1951 –
1979, learning the survey trade with Royal Canadian Horse Artillery
(RCHA) and travelled throughout Canada, Europe, Korea and the Middle
East in Egypt. It was with the 79th Field
Regiment RCHA that he made his first trip to Germany. He also made
trips to Korea with the 3rd Regiment, RCHA in
1953, a second trip to Germany with his family, worked with Pan
American Games in 1967, and was posted to Egypt to the Canadian
Contingent United Nations Emergency Force.
Jim enjoyed many accomplishments over the years and these
included receiving the Centennial Medal in 1967, being second in
command of Camp Gagetown Range Control, promotion to Master Warrant
Officer, received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 1977, naming
the Confederation Bridge in 1996, received the Minister of Veterans
Affairs Commendation in 2010, dinner with the Queen in 2010 and
accomplishments in Sports in the Service.
After retiring from service in 1979, he was employed with
Dominion Chair Company until 1989 and was also an agent for Tingley
Monuments for 16 years from 1983 – 1999. Jim served the
communities he lived in by volunteering and he was Past President of
104 Cubs and Scouts in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Royal Canadian Legion
Cobequid Branch 72, Great Village, Past Noble Grand Gladstone Lodge
#80 IOOF and was the custodian of Bass River Baptist Cemetery from
1987 – 2022.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and telling stories of
his past, and the Dr. Doolittle of Chipman’s Hollow
absolutely loved the wildlife that was all around his
home.
Above all, Jim was a devoted family man and he was proud of
his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and their families.
Jim is survived by his children, Cathy (Dean) Pike, Carolyn (Joseph)
McPherson, Jim Chipman (Monica), Susan (John) Silliker, Sandra
Chipman; grandchildren, Stephanie, Kevin R., Amanda, Timothy, Kevin
G., Matthew, Robbie, Melissa, Brandon, William, Meaghan, Jakob, James;
several great grandchildren; sister, Joan Chipman; sister-in-law,
Elaine Chipman; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Shannon
MacAloney, who Jim and Catherine formed a close bond with and looked
after each other over the years. Jim also sponsored three children
through World Vision.
Along with his parents, Jim was predeceased by his wife,
Catherine Alice (Faulkner); grandson, Kristopher Jason Hawkins;
siblings, Barbara (7), Linda, Sally, Grace, Shirley, Sylvia, Carl,
Tony.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the
nurses, doctors and staff of Camp Hill, V4 Westwood for the
exceptional care shown to Dad over the last three
months.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where the funeral service
will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, September 28, 2023, Pastor Connie
Stewart officiating. Royal Canadian Legion, Cobequid Branch 72, will
conduct a tribute service as part of the funeral service. Reception
will follow. Interment in Bass River Baptist Cemetery, Maple Avenue,
Bass River. If so desired, donations in Jim’s memory to Bass
River Baptist Cemetery are welcomed. Public messages of condolence may
