James Dolomont Obituary
James R. Dolomont
Sydney Mines
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James “Jim” Dolomont, age 89, on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in North Sydney on March 18, 1934, Jim was the son of the late Thomas and Kathleen (Murray) Dolomont. He was the eldest of nine children in the family.
Jim began working at the shipyards Point Edward Dockyard and LeVatte Construction as a maintenance welder and heavy equipment operator before embarking on a vocational teaching career in 1964. He taught welding at A.V.T.C. in Pt. Edward and later moved to the current N.S.C.C. Marconi Campus. After 15 years with the department of Education, Jim moved to U.C.C.B. (now C.B.U.), teaching the various welding processes to trades, technology, and industry students. He retired in 1999 from a 36-year teaching career.
Jim had many hobbies and always kept busy with handyman projects, gardening, and encouraging the neighbourhood children to get involved in fishing, building go-carts, kites, etc. He was quite a collector of antique farm implements, old trucks, construction toys, and operator watch fobs. He was involved as a Boy Scout Leader with the First North Sydney Troop for many of his younger years.
Jim is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Carolyn; his son Kenneth (Carla) of East Lawrencetown; brothers – Michael (Valeria) of New Harris, Thomas (Carol) of Halifax; sisters – Jean Hatcher (the late Clayton), Marjorie (the late John) Langford of Port Hawkesbury, Kathleen (the late Ron) Colpitts of Bedford, Judy Day (George) of Frenchvale; sister-in-law Monika Dolomont of Ontario, along with many nieces and nephews. Jim will be especially missed by his lifelong true friends, “Went” Anderson (Marsha) and Roger Leon (Eva). Their week-long snowmobile stays at Woodpecker Lodge will always be remembered along with scouting the province for old machinery – “Those were the days.” He also leaves behind the wonderful neighbours that meant so much to him over the last 18 years. He enjoyed seeing those boys growing up and was always entertained by their projects and hobbies.
Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his brothers Donald (Eileen) and Robert Dolomont.
A visitation for Jim will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 7 at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant St. in North Sydney. A funeral service will follow on Monday, January 8 at 11 a.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in the springtime at Holy Cross Cemetery. Online condolences can be left for the family by writing on the tribute wall of the obituary page at www.wjdooley.com.
