James Daniel O’Reilly of Lindsay, Ontario passed away on Friday, January 20th after a brief battle with aortic stenosis and two days before his scheduled surgery – obviously, we are beyond devastated; he so loved life, fought so hard to keep his and seemed eternally young.
James was born May 22, 1936 in Valentia, Ontario as the only child of Mary Murphy and Thomas Henry O’Reilly. He was raised on his family farm and attended Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute.
His unwavering love for his daughters, Helen O’Reilly Brennan (Joe Brennan) and Kathleen O’Reilly was always front and center. He beamed when he spoke about his grandchildren – Riley, Adam and James Brennan and Matilda, Ned and Tristan Taylor. Jim was equally blessed by the care and love shown by his partner Ethel Windrem and her children, Rick Windrem, Jenny-Lee Pearson, Jeanette Finney (Trevor), their grandchildren, Jonathan, Kandace, Matthew, Gary, Jamie-Lee, Vanessa, Lucas and Jacob, and great-grandchildren. They embraced him as part of their family with open arms.
He spent time doing the things he loved – golfing, curling, visiting his family and hanging out with his pals talking about all of the local chit chat. Jim always could make a connection with anyone – anywhere. In the hospital last week, he somehow made a personal connection with all three of his roommates. He was working until the end, running his businesses and loving it all. He was very proud of his subdivision and development on O’Reilly Lane at his family’s Lake Scugog farm. Another major accomplishment of Jim’s was the refurbishing of the Lindsay Post building to its former glory. He was also a stalwart member of the Lindsay Lions Club for years. Jim was a farmer to his core; he loved this country, its land and its bounty.
Please hold a special place for him in your heart, remember to treasure life’s moments and be kind to others. Our world is emptier without him. They say grief shows how much you were loved – Jim O’Reilly must have really been loved because there are so many people who are grieving the loss of “Jimmy O.”
He was a descendant of Irish immigrants who came to Canada and this area in the 1840s for a better life, and a wonderful life he had. It thus seems fitting to end this announcement with an Irish blessing.
“May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall softly upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.”
A tribute to Jim’s life will be held on Sunday, February 19th at 1:00 p.m. location will be announced on the Stoddart’s funeral website. If desired, a memorial donation may be made to A Place Called Home or the Kawartha Lakes Food Source would be appreciated by the family.
