It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of James Burke; better known to everyone as Clifford at the age of 68 years old on January 26, 2023 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish surrounded by his family. He was born on February 3rd, 1954 in Sampsonville to the late Anna Beatrice “Bea” Burke (Carter) and the late Joseph Lawrence “Rennie” Burke.
Clifford is survived by his sisters Elaine, Elieen, Doreen, Virginia, and Elizabeth, brother Phillip, his eight nieces Paula, Shelly, Joanne, Elena, Kerry, Shyla, Tara, and Shelby many more great nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, family, and friends. We would need an entire news article to name everyone. He was predeceased by his parents, grandparents and older brother, Bertie.
Clifford had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back. His house was always full of family and friends, the door was always open, the tea was always on or a cold one in the fridge. Wrestling, hockey, or the hunting shows were on TV and he had Leo Murray, Jean-Claude Heudes, Andy Sutherland and Jason MacAulay who sat for hours to listen to his stories and just be there for company; so he wasn’t alone. He loved that house. It was renovated by his younger brother Phillip and his wife Josie in 2012 with some “fancy details» as Clifford said to make it a home. His home was always filled with music. He would have his tapes playing and sometimes join in with his guitar or fiddle. He shared his birthday with his Uncle Ciffie, who was someone he looked up to and playing instruments together made Clifford proud. His two main passions were the fiddle and hunting.
Clifford didn’t leave far from home in recent years. When he was mobile, he was “over the road” to Connie or Joey Murray’s and “down the road” meant to Edgar Carter’s, or he was heading to Davey Landry’s. Years ago, many days were spent with his older brother, Bertie; they were connected at the hip, often going to Sarah Burke’s and she thought the world of them both. “Clifford is the only one who would pick up the broom” she told us. You didn’t see one without the other.
When he was idle or bored at home, he was on the phone to Tara several times a day to see what she or the kids were doing. During the day you would see Elaine, Doreen, and Bobby at the house, but he started his day off with a visit from Paula making sure the fire was started and he got his breakfast. Norman Carter made his appearance several times a day; he was at the house every day for many years. They always “took a spin” to town for tickets or drive looking for deer. When a little Frenchman named Jean-Claude moved to The Cove, he made a big impact on Clifford. They hung out multiple times a day, sightseeing for deer or a drive to the island changed it up for Clifford. He adored him and his family.
Clifford deserved all the love he received. Clifford was a loyal and devoted son to his mother Beatrice until she passed in 2019. He was at a loss, but the support he received made the loss a little easier. He lost two best friends, Joey and Edgar, which were both hard on him and the loss of his older brother Bertie, his first best friend. His great-nieces and nephews loved him. He taught them how to play cards, took them on trips to the deer blind or to the brook, ice fishing in the winter, and made sure they were fed. Health issues held Clifford back in his life, but he lived life to the fullest in any way that he could.
We would like to thank everyone who helped out Clifford when he needed it. You were lucky to have him in your life. If you were a new or old friend who supported him in any way, our family thanks you.
