It is with profound sadness we announce our father’s passing at age 89. He is together again with Kathy – his best friend and wife of 65 years. Loving dad to Ruth (Rick) Abernethy and Scott (Cindy Taylor) McLauchlan. Proud Grandpa to Laura and Ryan McLauchlan. Pre-deceased by his parents Gertrude and James and oldest son John (widow Jann). Will be missed by nieces, nephews and many friends.
Jim graduated from Walkerville Collegiate where he played hockey, helped win 2 WOSSA soccer championships, and was Officer in its Army Cadet Corps. He then attended the University of Western Ontario where he was active in the Delta Upsilon fraternity, played varsity soccer winning an intercollegiate championship, and earned an HBA degree. His passion for Western never diminished. He and classmates helped establish two ongoing Ivey Business School scholarships, he financially supported Western’s Adopt-a-Mustang program since its inception, and for forty consecutive years Jim & Kathy were warmly welcomed fans at over 200 Mustang football games.
Jim had a 38-year career with Chrysler Canada serving in different regions and performing multiple Sales & Marketing roles prior to retiring as a Senior Marketing Executive. His responsibilities included representing Chrysler for several years at the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association to advance industry objectives with both provincial and federal Governments and delivering corporate presentations to the Conference Board of Canada.
He was a lifelong sports enthusiast enjoying golf, cycling, long-distance swimming and curling. He was a member and past Board Member of the Windsor Curling Club and active at the club’s Seniors Association at Roseland G&C. In retirement, Jim and Kathy shared adventures in different countries and travelled annually to Florida.
His community contributions included fundraising for various charities and serving as elder and Board Member at Lincoln Road United Church prior to its closing. Jim and Kathy also loved being part of Roseland-Trinity United Church’s congregation.
Our family is ever grateful for the professional medical care our dad received from Dr. Myers, Dr. Glanz, and the entire health care team at Windsor Regional Hospital these past five months.
Donations in his memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
Funeral arrangements for Jim and Kathy are being handled by Families First 3260 Dougall Ave. South Windsor, 519-969-5841.
