Jacqueline «Hope» Henderson
Henderson, J. Hope – Age 94, Truro. It is with sadness for our loss and gratitude for a life well – lived that we announce the passing of Hope Henderson, 94 years young! She died peacefully in her home on March 29, 2023, just as she would have wanted. Jacqueline HOPE Henderson was born in Truro on October 30, 1928, to parents, John and Laura (Ripley) Henderson.
She grew up during the war years and was a very proud patriot —loved to sing the war songs. She graduated from Colchester County Academy and went on to the big city of Boston to take her nurse’s training. She trained at Boston City Hospital, and from then on, she was first and foremost a nurse! That was her life’s commitment!
After a three-year bout with TB and recovery, she went to work at the old, old hospital and later, the Colchester Regional Hospital. There she worked for 30 years on the pediatric floor, a job she loved.
Travel was on her agenda as well, and she made yearly visits to classmates in Boston area. She and her friend, Ruth enjoyed the southern sun, visiting different locales.
How she loved to sing and so enjoyed singing in the choir and keeping everyone’s gowns straight.
She loved to be with children, especially Eliot in the last few years – he was a ray of sunshine in her life. She was super excited about the arrival of Gwendolyn in Toronto.
Hope served on the VON Board for a number of years, and willingly canvased for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Canadian Cancer Society. After retirement, she had fun times playing cards, bingo, and casino trips.
She is survived by her sister, Barb Henderson-Townsend (Glen), Welshtown Lake; cousins, Ken (Chella) Henderson, Sheena and Eliot, Truro; and Devon (Jess) and Gwendolyn, Toronto, as well as step nieces and nephews and many other Henderson and Ripley cousins. She was kind of the matriarch!

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory gratefully accepted for St. Andrew’s United Church, VON Colchester County, or a charity of choice.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 26th from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. with a funeral service on Saturday, May 27th at 2pm, both in St. Andrew’s United Church on the corner of King and Duke Streets, Truro.
