In Loving Memory of Jack “Jake” Venner
February 26, 1932 – October 4, 2024
Died in a literal circle of family love. Recently celebrated his 71st wedding anniversary with the love of his life Shirley (Bowman). Also survived by his children Debbie Fitzsimmons (Fred), Gary Venner (Anne), Gregg Venner (Diane), Vicki Haberl, (Kevin), his grandchildren Kaila Howe (Tory), Kimberley (Mark) and Catherine Fitzsimmons, and Jaslyn (Owen) and Connor (Krista) Haberl, his great grandson Wesley and a soon to be great grandson too.
Jake was the last surviving member of his family: parents Les and Ada Venner, brothers Jim, Roy and Howard Venner, and sister Joan Janes. In recent years he mourned the death of his niece Jill and nephew Mark. Jake was a talented, artistically inclined carpenter who designed and built his two homes, in New Toronto in 1950’s and in Haliburton in 1990’s. He worked for the town of New Toronto and retired from the City of Etobicoke as Director of Building Operations.
He was a natural athlete, excelling in hockey and golf as his greatest passions. He was a long time member of The Faustina Club at Lakeshore Lions Arena, Etobicoke organizing, coaching, timing and refereeing hockey and touching the lives of so many young players. After 80 years of golfing, Jake excitedly sank his first hole in one in 2015 at Pinestone GC. He played his last game in 2023. He proudly recalled being a member of the Mimico Champion Minto Cup Lacrosse Team in 1947.
In his retirement life Jake and Shirl travelled extensively. Friendships enriched their lives – they nurtured early school friendships and always embraced new relationships. They enjoyed active membership at Century United Church in Etobicoke and Ingoldsby United Church. They spent endless hours building and grooming their piece of paradise on Kashagawigamog Lake and loved to host guests with a cup of tea, a lemonade or a glass of wine. He enjoyed carving as a member of the Haliburton Wood Carvers Club.
Jake was known by all as a kind and humble man, quiet but always interested in the lives of others and always willing to lend a hand. In his honour, be like Jake.
