Irene Rivkah Freed (Née Levitz)
Irene Freed, 95, of Toronto, Canada, passed away peacefully at Eatonville Centre on March 25, 2024. Irene was born in St. John’s Newfoundland to Rose and Bernard Levitz. Irene attended Bishop Spencer College in Newfoundland, followed by two years at Memorial University college. She relocated to Montreal, where she entered the faculty of science at McGill University, and then completed her degree. Working as a lab technician, she met her husband Sydney B. Freed. Irene spent many enjoyable years in the Hampstead area of Montreal before moving to Toronto. She enjoyed traveling, entertaining, a good hotdog or ice cream cone, knitting, watching, classic movies, and going to Fraser Brothers Auction House (Montreal) She was the consummate cook, and would feed anybody in her orbit, but would also provide comfort in the way of being a great listener and providing hugs and wisdom as needed. Irene is pre-deceased by her husband, Sydney; son, Michael Freed; and brother, Abraham Levitz. She is survived by her daughters, Pamela, (Rui) Santos, and Elizabeth Freed; son, Dr. Jourdan, (Annette Oliva) Freed; granddaughters Amanda (James) Cash, Alexandra Santos, great granddaughter, Willow Rose Cash and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Irene’s great generosity to friends and family will always be remembered, and she will leave pleasant and kind thoughts in the hearts and minds of people who knew her. Irene was laid to rest at the Lambton Hill cemetery (Beth Aaron), in Toronto.
