Family and friends are saddened to announce the passing of a dear wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Irene Chafe (nee Lee) on Thursday, September 5, 2024, surrounded by her family at the Health Sciences Centre, age 90 years. Predeceased by her husband John, daughter Diane Kieley, daughter-in-law Helena Chafe, sisters Barb Barton (Bill, deceased) and Kay Vaughn (Frank, deceased), brothers Al Baker, John Lee, Gussie Lee, sister-in-law Essie Flynn and brother-in-law Bill Chafe.
Leaving to mourn with loving and everlasting memories sons Terry (Helena, deceased), Bill (Janet), Perry (Maureen) and Larry (Karen); son-in law Don Kieley (Diane, deceased); her grandchildren Nicole, Ryan (Kim), Ashley (Phil), Samantha (Dean), Stacey (Matt), Jayme (Clark), Nathan (Courtney), and Pierce. As well as three precious great grandchildren Dominic Kieley, Clark Coates and Elisabeth Oake; sisters Mary (Mick) Sand, Angie (Willie) Vezina, Theresa (Doug) Fleming and Carol (Harold) Courtney; brother Bob (Dot, deceased) Lee; brother-in-law Danny (Millie) Chafe; sisters-in-law Marg (Gussie, deceased) Lee, and Barb (John, deceased) Lee; special friends Patsy and Robert Howlett, Bessie and Jim Hearn, Betty and David Doyle, Diane and Trevor Chafe and their children, Lynette Snooke, Kathleen Clark and Harvy and Lorraine King as well as a large circle of nieces and nephews.
Irene was a kind, caring lady who lived a beautiful, quiet life. She had a great sense of humor and a beautiful laugh. She was a joyful presence who loved her friends and family and filled her home with love, warmth and wonderful memories that will forever keep going. Irene treasured her family, with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren always being her top priority. They were her sole focus, and she took care of them until the end, sometimes to the exclusion of her own needs. Irene was known to provide love, companionship and solace to others while asking for nothing in return. Irene also loved flowers, sitting on her front patio enjoying the view and having a chat with passers by. She was sure to give you a wave as you drove by her home. For anyone who happened to walk by she was certain to invite you in for a chat, a cup of tea and even a piece of hard cheese. One of her greatest passions was her daily strolls through her home community of Petty Harbour. Along her walks she took joy in chatting with those she met, whether they be someone she knew or a complete stranger. By the end of the chat, you would be certain to have learned a lot about her life and maybe have an invitation to drop into her home anytime for a tea. Irene’s beacon of kindness and love will forever reside in our hearts. Her legacy, exemplified by her kindness and compassion, will continue to inspire and guide us. As we grapple with the loss of Irene’s physical presence, we find solace in knowing that her spirit lives on through her family and friends and the love she instilled in us.
Visitation to take place at Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road, on Monday, September 9, 2024, from 12 noon – 9 pm. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at St. Kevin’s Church in the Goulds, at 10:00 am with inurnment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Petty Harbour.
