Peacefully, in his bed at home, Hugh Warren Ghent of Sarnia Ontario passed into the presence of his Lord on the morning of May 7th, 2023 at 70 years of age. It can truly be said of Hugh that he fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. (2 Tim 4:7).
Hugh was born Dec 4th, 1952 to Harold Davidson Ghent and Alice Effie (Brown) Ghent in Wingham, Ontario, the 5th of eventually 8 children. (In our family, he’s known as Hughie, 5/8 of the original siblings.) Hugh was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law John Powell, but is survived by sisters Jo Ann (Martin) Brown, Dawn (John) Powell, Nancy (Jean-Pierre) Snyers Ghent, Barbie (Handsome Uncle John) Vlasov, and sister-in-law Janice Ghent; brothers John Ghent, Doug (Sharon) Ghent, and Paul (Liz) Ghent. He leaves behind his beloved wife of nearly 48 years Claire Diana (Wyatt) Ghent and his precious children Andrea Ghent, Heather (Mike) Sztanyo, Graham (Melodie) Ghent, and Laura (Dave) Mueller. Hugh was immensely pleased to be given sixteen grandchildren and pulled out that impressive stat often; he shone brightest when they surrounded him! Nicolas Ghent, Anthony Pomponio, Gavin Pomponio, David Sztanyo, Abbie Ghent, Marisa Sztanyo, Seth Ghent, Joseph Sztanyo, Silas Ghent, Hallie Sztanyo, Shaphan Ghent, Callum Mueller, Elaina Sztanyo, Gideon Ghent, Ainsley Mueller, and Wesley Mueller brought their Grandpa endless pride, “twinkle-in-his eye” opportunities, and joy that took his voice away. He was thankful to tears for the profound relationships God blessed him with as his children started their families; Melodie Ghent, Mike Sztanyo, Dave Mueller, Dino Pomponio, and Darren Pye made the family and gatherings complete. He loved you all deeply. Hugh was a treasured son-in-law to John and Janet (Page) Wyatt of Ottawa, Ontario and brother-in-law to Phil Wyatt and Corinne Heybroek. Hugh is also survived by so many nephews, nieces, and extended family members that we cannot mention them all, but Uncle Hugh was loved by them and they all knew of his love for them.
Hugh met Claire at the University of Waterloo where he studied to become a mechanical engineer. After they married and graduated, he accepted a position at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in Chalk River Ontario where he worked from 1978 until 1995, when he was drawn away into the world of computer programming by his persuasive brother-in-law Phil. Although Hugh worked remotely from Deep River, the Ottawa headquarters had a brain-shaped rock on a stand in the foyer that paid respect to Hugh’s immense contribution as he crunched the numbers from a distance. This change of occupation led to many new successes and adventures for Hugh, including groundbreaking digital mapping technology at a time when cell phone coverage was in its infancy. Having been raised on a farm in Ayr Ontario, Hugh Ghent, like all Ghents, was known for his strong work ethic. Even on vacation he needed jobs to do; everyone knew to have a list of helpful tasks lined up if he came to visit, because Hugh needed to be useful! He modeled and cultivated this strength into his children and grandchildren and swelled with pride to see them work hard at their callings. Hugh’s sweat and heart have poured into more house, church, and camp projects than can be counted, across Ontario and wherever his loved ones have needed him. He even collaborated to develop improved lobster habitats with tracking capabilities for struggling workers in the Bahamas. Because, if he didn’t, who would? That was our Hugh.
However, hard work was not Hugh’s priority. His focus was not primarily on his relationships. Financial stability was not the desire of his heart. His heart was set on the Lord his God. “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, my God” Ps 42:1. Everyone who has sat in church with Hugh has watched him stand to pray only to lose his voice in emotion before the God he loved so deeply. This is the legacy I will cling to. An imperfect man who knew he desperately needed God. A proud, strong, intelligent, impactful man who knew that strength was found in humility and gentleness, as modeled in Jesus our saviour. A man who was not ashamed to weep before friends, children, and grandchildren as he tried day after day to express just how broken and grateful he was to God his Father and Provider. Hugh Warren Ghent was a man who knew what it was to wrestle intellectually and think deeply and who remained convinced of the reality and truth of God as creator, saviour, helper, and friend. In song, in prayer, in service to others, in careful listening, in wise counsel, in hard work and problem solving, Hugh worshiped his God. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, and he kept the faith. Praise God.
A funeral service will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation held prior from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
