Howard Richard Philip Nettle
September 18, 1931 – May 14, 2024

Age 92, passed away quietly on Tuesday, May 14 th , at the QEII Hospital in Halifax after a brief illness. Howie, as he liked to be called, was born on September 18, 1931, in Toronto, ON.
Dad grew up with six siblings and was the second youngest with four older sisters. School was not his favourite pastime, but he sure didn’t mind going to work to earn a dollar. He quit school after Grade 10 and went to work at a variety of jobs including Kingsway Lumber where, apparently, he was very good at bill collecting. We were never sure if it was his keen skill of negotiation, or they were afraid of the repercussions if they didn’t pay. He also worked at Eaton’s Dept. Store where he learned to wrap the perfect present, each corner skillfully turned down, it was a piece of craftmanship. We always had to open his presents with a knife, no tearing and ripping allowed. He also spent a number of years working with his older brother Bob in Whitby for his auto parts company. It was here that dad learned the finer details of the combustion engine. He could dismantle a car engine and put it back together with, almost, all the pieces accounted for. One night in 1955 his older sister, Mary Ellen, brought a young woman home for dinner. They were attending the United Church Training School together. Dad was smitten right away and offered to drive her home. They corresponded for 2 years while mom worked in Fredericton, NB and they married in Amherst, NS on October 12, 1957. They settled in Toronto and started a family (Adrienne), but the Maritimes were calling. Dad accepted a travelling sales position with Playtex and they moved to Amherst in 1961 where their second child was born (Kevin). Selling women’s underwear turned out to be harder than collecting bad debt from home builders, so he took a job with Domtar and they moved to Saint John, NB in 1962. Here they had their third child, (Tim). In 1965 he was transferred with Domtar to Nova Scotia and they settled in Lower Sackville, and lived there for the next 42 years. In 1973 he joined Nova Scotia Building Supplies as a Manager and worked his way up to Vice President in 1979. This was a very demanding job and dad put in many long hours, helping the company grow and expand throughout NS and NB. Unfortunately, the timing for the expansion was not great and with interest rates hitting the low 20’s, builders stopped building and the result was the company went into receivership in 1982 and dad lost his job. He didn’t hang his head. He got out there and started looking for work at the age of 52 and worked for a number years with the R2000 and New Home Warranty Programs. At the age of 60 he decided to start his own business, Reliant House Inspections, and did that for 10 years until getting up and down the ladder started to become difficult. He was active for many years at Knox United Church where he was an elder and he was a charter member of the Sackville Lions Club where he was an active member for many years. In his younger years he was a Boy Scouts leader and coached hockey with very little hockey or coaching experience. He often reminisced about that year coaching and the positive support and feedback he received for his style of coaching. Dad believed in fair play before it was a common theme in minor sports, as he felt that every player deserved equal playing time no matter their skill level.
Most importantly of all he was a devoted and loving husband and father always putting his family first. We spent many happy family summer vacations on the Amherst Shore and trips to visit his family in Ontario. No one could bbq chicken the way he did. Charcoal bbq and turn every 5 minutes, for 60 minutes. His key was a sip of rye with every turn.
He is survived by his children, Adrienne Patterson (Kelly), Kevin (Marsha), and Tim (Odille), his 7 grandchildren, Meghan (Peter) Kayley (Zach), Matthew, Ian, Haden, Gabriel and Samuel and two great grandchildren, August and Hazel. He is predeceased by his parents, Jane Patterson Philip and Howard Lloyd Nettle, his siblings, Margaret, Jean, Bob, Phyllis, Mary Ellen and his younger brother David.
A private family celebration of life will be held later this summer.
